WHAT'S COMING UP NEXT WEEK?
Bullies to Buddies
Parent presentation grades 3-8
Wednesday March 15th, 2023
Location: Orange Avenue School Auditorium
Time: 7:00-8:30 PM
In this workshop, you will learn how to teach your child how to respond to verbal aggression from others. The Bullies to Buddies method, developed by psychologist Izzy Kalman, is a social skills program that uses role-playing to teach children how to respond to bullying. Most anti-bullying programs are based on identifying and punishing the bully. Bullies to Buddies teaches how to respond to verbal aggression in a way that immediately decreases the incidence of bullying and increases resilience. This method doesn’t just change the lives of individual children; it has the potential to change the entire culture of a school and its community.

Counselor's Corner
In the month of March, 6th grade students' usual schedule of SEL lessons with Mr. Petruccelli will include a focus on the Full Value principles of ‘Be Here’ & ‘Be Safe’ in acting as an upstander against gossip & rumors, aggression, and bullying. Students will work to develop the skills of identifying negative & potentially harmful situations and of crafting age-appropriate, meaningful responses to employ as an upstander in these situations.
In the Month of March 7th grade students will discuss relational aggression and how bullying and conflict differ. They will work with the counselors on how to resolve conflict and understand healthy friendship boundaries.
8th grade students received lessons on healthy relationships. Students discussed how to recognize toxicity in a relationship, their rights, and how to communicate in different relationships, as well as how to get help when in an unhealthy relationship.
Grades 1-5 will receive peer and counselor-led lessons on conflict resolution with a focus on the difference between bullying, bothering, and conflict. The students will be taught conflict resolution skills through read-alouds and discussions, as well as 8th grade peer role plays.

ATTENDANCE AND LATENESS
Punctuality is also a habit HAS strives to expect and support. Middle school students who arrive after 8:10 a.m. are considered tardy. They must obtain a late pass from the office. After the sixth tardy, a student will receive a lunch detention each time they are tardy. Parents/Guardians will be notified if their child has been tardy five or more times. On February 1st tardy counts will reset and the process will begin again.
No Dogs on School Property
Bringing along the family dog, especially with such pleasant weather, during arrival and dismissal has become a common practice for many. However, it does pose some safety concerns for students who have a fear of dogs.
Thanks to everyone for being mindful of keeping the school grounds free of any dogs so that all students can move about freely without worry of having to come in contact or pass by a dog on the premises.
Visitors/Forgotten Items
Please know that when items for middle school students are dropped off the students will be called at the end of the period to pick up their belonging. This is to help limit interruptions.
If you are coming to the building for a meeting or to pick up a student please be aware that will not be allowing anyone to enter the building while the middle school students are passing between classes during period changes. We appreciate your patience.
You must have your ID to enter the building. If you are dropping off your child and you don't have your ID ring the bell and had your student enter the vestibule. Your child will then ring the second bell and the office staff will bring them in and direct them to class.
