Learn, Lead and Light the Way--A Leader in Me School
Week of Monday, September 26th
*Leader in Me Family Focus*
Habit 3-Put First Things First
People who put first things first focus on the important, not just the urgent, act on priorities, plan weekly and act daily. You are putting first things first when you organize your time around the most important things and eliminate the unimportant.
Kid Language
Work First, Then Play: I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
Ways to practice Put First Things First:
- Talk with your family about your most important jobs or responsibilities, such as doing homework, making the bed, or taking out the garbage.
- Do your chores before being asked.
- Do the hardest part of your homework first.
- Think of something you’ve been putting off for a long time, like cleaning up your room or pumping up the flat tire on your bike. Go do it right now!

I like to help families because my parents were immigrants to the US & they struggled at first to find out about resources. I like being able to help families with resources & opportunities for their children.

I love to be able to help families & students & provide impactful resources for the whole family.

Getting to know all of the students at school!
An Interview with Derek
How long have you been a coordinator?
This is my 3rd year as a Community Schools Coordinator.
How did you get into the role of a Community School Coordinator?
As a teacher, I realized there were often layers of needs that students were not having met and that could not be met within the classroom - prerequisites to the brain being capable of the psychological and cognitive process of learning - as Coordinators, we strive to provide those layers of support so students become capable of learning and striving to their potential.
What makes you proud to be a Community School Coordinator?
I am proud to be a Community School Coordinator because I believe a village (school, family, and community) raises stronger children than any school or family can alone.
What is your favorite thing about being a Community School Coordinator?
One of my favorite parts of being a Community School Coordinator is helping youth see themselves as members of a greater community of people rooting for them, and that they too have an essential role in creating the community they hope to live within.

4. Family Resource Survey
Dear families, in previous years we have been able to send a paper survey that lets us know which resources would be most helpful to provide. This year we are only doing a digital version so that we can organize the responses more effectively and get the right resources to the right families. This survey is how we connect families to the free Angel Tree holiday gifts, the free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, and many other resources. We want to be sure these great resources get into the hands and homes of those who would most benefit from them – so please make sure to complete this 5 minute survey (English and Spanish LINK).
