3D Modeling and Animation
Students in Mr. White's 3D Modeling and Animation course are diligently working on their final projects for the school year. These projects demonstrate a diverse range of approaches, including animations, character modeling, 2.5D animations, fluid simulations, and collaborations with Mr. Bennett's Multimedia class. In one such collaboration, multimedia students designed and illustrated characters, which were then transformed into 3D objects by the 3D modeling students. These objects were subsequently printed using a resin 3D printer and returned to the multimedia students for priming and painting.
This is not the first time students in the 3D Modeling and Animation class have created models for public use. They have previously collaborated with organizations such as the Alutiiq Museum to create replicas of Alutiiq artifacts. By employing photogrammetry techniques, the artifacts were scanned, their meshes refined with software, and then printed on Ender 5 printers. The resulting replicas were sent to the art department for priming and painting before being shared with Kodiak's rural schools and integrated into classroom activities.
Education Manager Leda Ferranti expressed her admiration for the process, stating, "The details captured by this process are truly amazing. The replicas are very realistic, yet sturdy enough to be handled and examined, while the fragile original artifacts are preserved in the museum. It's like having the same artifact in two places at once!"
The Innovative Media Lab (D111) welcomes further opportunities for students to practice and hone their skills in immersive and interactive 3D. For more information, contact Anthony White at Anthony.white@kibsd.org.
