Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for working with your child to support school at home during distance learning. I am so proud of our students for their engagement during this time, what an improvement this time around. I also want to thank our online families and Mrs. Kruse. I believe part of why distance learning was successful is because our online students, teacher and parents have been navigating learning from home for several months, which helped us all understand what worked best when students are learning from home.

At the Park Hill Board of Education meeting on December 10, there was an important presentation about 2nd semester, which starts on January 19. If you did not get a chance to watch the board meeting, you can view the presentation below.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Recess Reminder

The cold weather is upon us! Just a friendly reminder that students are expected to go out for recess each day. Appropriate clothing and shoes should be worn for outside activities. On days when the temperature and/or wind chill is above 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the playground is cleared of snow and ice, there will be outdoor recess.

*Masks will be worn during recess. This is a change from the beginning of the school year.

Please put your child's name on their winter clothing (coats, gloves, hats, etc..). This will help us return your child's lost clothing to them quickly!

Message from Mrs. Mickie

If your family might qualify for free or reduced-price meals, please complete the 2020-2021 meal benefit application in your SchoolCafe account, if you have not already done so.

Even though meals are free this year, this form also helps us get needed funding for district services for students. And if you are signed up this year, you won't have a gap in services at the beginning of the next school year.

If you qualify for free or reduced-price meals, you are eligible for additional discounts on things like health care, college application fees, athletics, AP class fees, and fees for the SAT and ACT tests. For more information, click here.

If there is anything else I can assist you with, please reach out at any time!

Message from Nurse Melissa

Happy Holidays from Nurse Melissa!

We have had a busy semester and I hope that you are all ready to relax for the holidays. While these times are filled with family and fun, it is still unfortunately Covid and Flu season and are both very contagious. One of the best ways to protect you and your family is to continue to be diligent in preventing the spread. Tips to remember are:

  • Frequent hand washing and use of sanitizer,
  • Wear masks,
  • Limit number of people in groups,
  • stay home if you are sick or feel sick
Please continue to notify me of any illness or potential exposures during the break. Our goal is to keep all our staff and students healthy and in the classroom. I look forward to seeing everyone back in 2021!

Jones Center Readers

When we made the shift to distance learning, one of the tasks our staff engaged in was having Jones Center staff members record a read aloud of some great picture books. Students can watch these from home as bedtime stories or whenever they prefer. It is a great way for students to listen to a read aloud and get to see our faces without masks!

Mrs. Vicki pushed one out each day during distance learning and will continue to do so over Winter Break. However, the links to these read aloud can be found on our Jones Center Webpage as well.

PTA Meeting

Please consider joining us for our 2nd quarter PTA meeting.

Tutoring Resources for Park Hill Parents

As our students continue to learn online and in distance learning, there continues to be a need for tutoring support.

We are happy to announce a partnership between Park Hill School District and the Mid-Continent Public Library. This partnership provides all Park Hill parents and students with live access to online tutoring and homework help through the Mid-Continent Public Library website. Below is information for you to share with your parents and students (as appropriate).

Janis Yokely, LMC coordinator, has put together resources for accessing these tutoring supports:

  • Important information for you to know: Login access to this resource requires the parent/student to enter the student’s Park Hill S number. Written directions for logging in are attached.
  • A video explaining how to navigate the website is located here.
  • This resource is also located at Park Hill’s Parent University website located here.
  • The online learning support line is answered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8am and 5pm. The number is 816.359.4044.

Virtual Relaxation Room

This is a space created for all staff, parents, students and community members. Many of the tools included in this website are designed to calm, comfort and create a space for relaxation. This is a great spot to practice self-care.

Engagement and Motivation: Helping Handout for Home

Preparing for a two week shut down can feel very overwhelming for you as a parent. As you begin to prepare for learning at home with your child, take a look through the attached handout from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The handout is titled: Engagement and Motivation: Helping Handout for Home. The article provides 15 practical recommendations for encouraging engagement within the home setting. A few recommendations include: emphasizing effort and persistence more than ability, encouraging self-comparisons rather than social comparisons, and using praise and rewards wisely & strategically. Read the article to find out how to go about incorporating the recommendations into your learning routine, to see which strategies you are already incorporating, and to read up on a new recommendation to try!

Pandemic Transparency

Please remember that Park Hill sends weekly communication about COVID-19 cases. This information can also be found HERE. We will always notify parents if children were in direct contact at school with someone who tested positive.

See the new, upgraded COVID-19 data dashboard.

Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.

That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee. Anyone can nominate an employee for this award by using the form below. It asks you to share how your nominee demonstrates our district values of continuous improvement, high expectations, integrity, visionary leadership and student focus.
