Definition: A simile is a figure of speech that uses like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things.
Example: "but his thick eyebrows and pointed military mustache were as black as the night."
Metaphor
Definition: A Metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things. Its a simile but doesn't use like or as.
Example:"The sea was as flat as a plate-glass window."
Personification
Definition: A Personification is a figure of speech in which an animal, object, a force of nature, or an idea is given human form or characteristics
Example:"He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out, but the speeding yacht slapped him in the face.
Hyperbole
Definition: A hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotion, make a point, or evoke humor
Example:"I could sleep for a year"
Alliteration
Definition: A alliteration is a repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of non-rhyming words or syllables.
Example:"Desperately he struck out with strong strokes"
