Envirothon
On Wednesday, May 3, the 5th and 6th grade Envirothon teams from DAIS competed in the York County Envirothon at John Rudy Park. The Envirothon competition is sponsored by the York County Conservation District. Students study Pennsylvania wildlife, aquatics, forestry, and current issues taught by Mrs. Brothman, Mrs. Bell, and Mrs. Tyson. DAIS sent 3 teams to the competition; the Super Snapping Turtles, the Rabid Raccoons, and the Playing Possums. Proudly, the Super Snapping Turtles won the 5th place overall ribbon out of 57 teams competing. In addition, 5 teams at the competition were chosen for creative hats and DAIS took 2 of these awards! The Super Snapping Turtles and the Rabid Raccoons were recognized as 2 of the 5 teams with creative hats.
On May 9th, the fourth graders of DAIS did an awesome job representing our school. Our three teams, the Radiant Raccoons, the Outstanding Otters, and the Bold Bobcats all placed in the Gold category. Our Otters placed 4th overall out of a total of 73 teams. Our Radiant Raccoons came in 2nd place overall, and took home first place in 2 of the 3 main categories: Aquatics and Wildlife! Our Bold Bobcats came in 1st place overall out of the 73 teams, and won first place in Forestry!
24 Game Math Challenge
On Thursday, April 20, DAIS held its third annual 24 Game Math Challenge. 24 Game is a fast-paced mental arithmetic game in which the objective is to use the allowed operations and all four numbers on the game card to formulate a way to create the number 24. Each fourth, fifth, and sixth grade DAIS team held playoffs on teams to determine their team winner. The winners from each team at DAIS competed in the 24 Game DAIS Challenge in two, twelve minute rounds against their like grade level team winners. The event was streamed live for students to cheer on the mathematicians. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners received a small trophy, and 4th and 5th place winners were awarded medals. A large traveling trophy was awarded to each grade level’s first place winners’ team. New this year, fourth and fifth grades’ top winners represented DAIS in the 24 Game Tournament that was held at the Lincoln Intermediate School #12 on May 4. DAIS has three students finish at the silver level and one student finish at the bronze level.

LIU STEM Innovative Design Series Challenge
On Monday, May 8, 2017, selected DAIS students had an opportunity to participate in the LIU STEM Innovative Design Series Challenge. This was the first LIU STEM 3D Design Challenge for students. DAIS had 5 teams competing in the challenge. The students competed in three challenges, all with a boat theme. The first challenge: Design a boat using the TinkerCad software that will hold 14 lego pieces and several pennies. This design was to be 3D Printed. The printed item could take no more than 3 hours to print. The second challenge had the students creating a floatation device to hold pennies. They could purchase aluminum foil, sheet metal, straws and tape for their device. The points for this event were decided by amount of money spent on the items and the number of pennies they could float on their boat. If they sunk their boat, points were deducted. The final event had the students take a set of material (straws, wheels, tape, paper and cloth) to create a car that would be wind powered. They had to use wind to propel the boat 10 feet on a 1 foot wide table. Students were given two tries, in case the car fell off of the table. DAIS placed first, second, third, fifth, and seventh out of ten teams. Well Done DAIS 3D Printing Team! Additionally, please see the feature HERE that highlights the work of the grade 6 3D Printing Competition Team.
