Tiger Time News
News from the O.C. Taylor Principal, Lisa Young
Young@Heart, Nov. 6, 2016
This week we have a few 2nd graders introducing our Tiger Time News Video Edition: http://www.touchcast.com/octaylorelem/tiger_time_news_11_6
Fall is fully upon us, and the children and teachers are loving it. The holiday season is around the corner! We have some exciting new events the students, parents, and teachers have decided to try here at O.C. Taylor.
- Tiger Spirit Days - We will start having Tiger spirit days once a 6-week period! Woohoo! These will be similar to a traditional pep rally. We will sing our school song, say pledges, sing our National Anthem, acknowledge student success, dance to academic songs, watch our teachers participate in fun competitions, and much more! Parents are invited to attend. More information will come.
- Polar Express Day - Thursday, December 15, all day. All students and teachers will wear their cozy pajamas to school to watch The Polar Express. Mrs. Putman and I will be dressed as Train Conductors in our pajamas too and will be collecting train tickets from the students to ride on our own version of the Express. Our GCISD Director of Humanities will be on site to witness our children experiencing this story.
- Turkey Drive - The Terrific Taylor Tigers (TTT) Group has voted to collect frozen turkeys this year for those in need. See note below from Mrs. Whisman.
- Toy Drive - This year we will be hosting a Toy Drive, very similar to what we have done in the past here at OCT. These toys will benefit children less fortunate.
As always, my door and email in-box are open. Let me know what we can do for your little Tiger!
To the greatest of days,
Principal Young

SPECIALS UPDATES
A Note from TTT (Taylor Terrific Tigers)
This year, our TTT, which is O.C. Taylor’s version of Student Council made up of fourth and fifth grade representatives, decided to sponsor our first annual “Turkey Drive!" On the morning of Friday, November 18, we will collect frozen turkeys, which will be donated to GRACE and the Tarrant Area Food Bank. There will be a parent volunteer with a pickup at the bus loop side and at the front of the school. You will be able to drop off your turkey at the same time that you drop off your child(ren). Not only will you be helping families in need during the holidays, but there is also an incentive for the parents! We will be having a competition to see which grade level donates the most turkeys. (We will be looking at the percentage of turkeys brought in for each grade level.) The winning grade level will be invited to attend a free “Parents’ Night Out“ one evening in December, where the students will watch a movie and have popcorn. The actual date is still to be determined.
Since several of you have more than one child attending O.C. Taylor, one donated turkey will count towards the grade levels of all of the siblings.
We know that O.C. Taylor families are very caring and giving, so we hope that this will offer another way to teach our children the value of being charitable. Start watching the grocery ads for special deals on turkeys! Please remember that they must be frozen.
Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and giving spirit!
A Note from our Music Teacher, Mrs. Vencil
Our 3rd and 4th graders are working hard to prepare for the Veterans Day program Friday, Nov. 11 at 8:30 a.m.in the OCT cafeteria. We are working on proper vocal technique and performance etiquette. Talk to your talented Tiger about what those words mean!
Follow me on @OCTVencill for updates on the fun we're having in the OCT Music Room!!

Technology Tips: Webville Outlaws
LOOK-AT-DIS LOISE.
For the next four weeks, we will be looking at the NetSmartz Web Outlaws. NetSmartz Kids has excellent information for students – videos, games, and more. The site is developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and has age-appropriate resources to help keep children safe online as well as off-line.
This week we are talking about Look-at-Dis Louie. Look-at-Dis Louie sends pictures that may not be appropriate for children. We NEVER open attachments because we need to get permission and help from adults to make sure it’s okay. Kids, if you open up a picture of something you know is wrong, bad, or inappropriate, GO TELL A TRUSTED ADULT!
Students, click here to get to know the web outlaws better:
City of Colleyville, Mayor of the Day Contest
The City of Colleyville is excited to announce that the 12th annual Mayor for a Day contest is open. We encourage you to participate. All entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5. Announcement of the winner will be made the following week. The contest is open to Colleyville residents only, in grades 2nd-7th.
To enter, all contestants must submit a one-to-two page essay about what you would do to make Colleyville the best city in North Texas. Entries must include the student’s name, school and grade, address, and parents’ phone number at the top of the essay. No other identifying information should be included in the essay, as all personal information will be redacted prior to review by the committee of judges.
For the Mayor for a Day essay contest winner, a day as the city’s “mayor” is the beginning of an unforgettable year. The student will serve as honorary mayor in January, touring city facilities and co-presiding with Mayor Richard Newton at a City Council meeting. Additional activities will be scheduled throughout the year, according to the student’s availability.
Full contest details are available on the City’s website (http://www.colleyville.com/news/Latest_News/article1059.html) or please feel free to contact Addrienne Lothery, CGFO Strategic Services Manager at 817.503.1112 with any questions.

Superfoodie Day!
Superfoodie Day: GCISD Nutrition Services featured pumpkin as part of our superfoodie day on Friday, November 4. All students had the opportunity to try a scratch prepared pumpkin spread at lunch. Pumpkin is often overlooked as a superfood. It has many nutritional benefits. It is a good source of iron, vitamins A & C and is low in calories. Some fun pumpkin facts include:
- The average weight of a pumpkin is 13 lbs. The seeds are also a good source of nutrition, rich in beta carotene fiber & protein.
- The U.S produces over 1.5 BILLION pounds of pumpkin per year
- Pumpkins are 90% water
Ask your child about the pumpkin! Click here to see the flyer!
