Environmental Print
Learning Outcomes: Reading Habits and Routines, Print and Alphabet Knowledge, Vocabulary
Point out environmental print in and outside the home. For example, walk around a room in your house and find words on drawings, posters, fliers, newspapers, notes on the fridge, etc. Invite your child to read some of those words. While you are walking around, talk about the places and items around your home where your child might find words they can read.
Why It's Important
Environmental prints make up some of the first words children can recognize and "read" with ease. These words and symbols are familiar, and seen over and over again, they can aid your child's understanding of words (what a word looks like, that it has meaning, etc.) and the sounds letters can make. Being able to recognize these words/signs/symbols repeatedly helps give your child confidence and can spark a desire to read more.
Not Ready Yet
If your child is having difficulty recognizing environmental print words around your house, you may want to start with more easily recognized words/symbols. For example, your child's name, a STOP sign, or the logo of a favorite fast food restaurant are more easily "read" and recognized by little ones. Look for that kind of environmental print when you're out, in newspaper ads, or even online.
Need a Challenge
If your child seems to be recognizing environmental print with ease, you may want to play an environmental print "I Spy" game! As you drive on the bus or in the car, or when you're in your home, "spy" a word, and let your child find it. Your child can also "spy" words that you have to find. There's environmental print everywhere, so you can play this game virtually anywhere!
