Message from Jeff and Yolanda
On Friday, LWTC received a check for $84,635 for the industry certifications that students earned in target occupational areas such as aircraft/airplant mechanics, surgical technology, nursing assisting dental assisting, welding, auto service technician, computer systems, network support, drafting, and pharmacy technician. We did not receive the full amount expected as statewide industry certifications were up from the 2015-2016 school year and FLDOE depleted the funds. So, this year industry certifications were valued at about $800 as opposed to $1,000. Any certifications earned from this point forth will count towards next year so please keep reporting them to Amanda. Also, state legislation passed that will provide funding for industry certification earned by dual-enrollment students in multimedia/digital design, culinary, medical administrative assisting, veterinary assisting, legal assisting and accounting.

Listen Current is offering their free premium subscription during summer for teachers - Here’s your chance to learn more about those upgraded features to include “curriculum aligned lessons, interactive transcripts and instructional strategies for supporting ELLs.” Based on authentic public radio stories, the site’s focus on various non-fiction curriculum areas is engaging and timely.
Speaking of listening, AudioBooksSync provides a fantastic summer reading opportunity for (but not limited to!) teens with their weekly free SYNC summer audiobook downloads. The program pairs a popular title/author with a more classical title/author with similar themes, plots and/or characters. This summer’s titles/authors range from Walter Dean Myers’ Juba! to The Omnivore’s Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat by Michael Pollan to The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial by Peter Goodchild. It’s a great way to keep them (and yourself!) reading during the summer.

Spotlight on LWTC Staff Member
Pharmacy is Claudia Rivero’s life. Not only does she teach the Pharmacy Technician course to students, but she also works part-time at Publix as a pharmacist. Claudia’s father was a teacher, and her father’s advice was to obtain her teaching certificate. She came to the Lorenzo Walker Technical College when she was informed about the opening through a friend and decided to apply. She enjoys helping the students and sharing her knowledge and as she shared, “The students can learn from my experiences.” Claudia’s greatest career accomplishment is seeing her students graduate and finding a job. Many of her students are offered employment through their clinical rotations. Lastly, Claudia enjoys her vacation time and riding her motorcycles and scooters.
