My Interest In Forgetting
The reason I found why we forget as an interesting topic is because everyone is curious of why we forget. I think maybe if we learn why we forget it may make it easier for us to learn how to remember.
Hermann Ebbinghaus
After 24 hours 2/3 of our previously learned material is lost and his chart shows how we retain memory.
Karl Lashley
After removing parts of the brain, animals retain more memory
Memories of Abuse
Many psychotherapist question the believes of people repressing their memories simply because they do not want to remember.
Why Do We Forget?
There is multiple answers to why we forget things. One reason is because the memory you had simply disappeared and is no longer available but this is mostly applied to short term memory. When this is happening it is our pre-frontal lobe that is failing. Another reason why we forget is because the memory is still in your system but it cannot be retained at the time. This relates with long term memory and may easily be retained when reminded with a picture, name, sound or smell. When this is happening it is our hippocampus that is failing.
