Newsletter for Brave Families Week of February 14
Brave Connection Issue 2.14.22
A friendly reminder that we will NOT have school on Monday, February 21, in observance of President's day.
Students may only park in the West parking lot of the school and they must have a parking permit in order to do so. Beginning on Tuesday, February 17, cars that are parked in the west lot without a permit will receive a parking ticket. The student store has sold all permits, so if you do not have one, you will not be able to park at the school. The East Lot is only for staff
We are excited to bring back "Trades Night" for our Braves, where they can come and learn about what jobs are available in the trades, how to get certified for those jobs, and speak directly to people in those jobs. If you or someone you know is involved in the trades and may be willing to volunteer for our event on March 15th at 5:30pm, please reach out to our APA, Gayle Ross at email@example.com to get more information about the event.
Upcoming Parent Trainings:
We have two important parent groups that will be starting up again soon so please keep an eye out for more information:
1. Parent Support Group with DJ Johnson (Begins Tuesday, February 22 in the library @6:30pm) Please note time and date change.
2. College Prep Parent Academy: Continues Thursday, February 17 @ 6:00 pm - trainings will be virtual. Students who participate with their parent will receive a College Prep Student Academy recommendation letter to supplement their college admissions and scholarship applications. All families are welcome - these seminars are specifically focused at what the parents of 9th and 10th graders should be doing to prepare.

If you are the parent of a senior, please read through this application process!! If you have not started working on the FAFSA, now is a great time to start: https://studentaid.gov/. Counselors will be reaching out to seniors who have not completed their FAFSA yet, but you are essential to the process. Even if you think you won't qualify for money, you should still fill out the FAFSA as it is necessary for all students attending community colleges, universities, as well as trade schools.
Why: Remember the FAFSA is the gateway to access college scholarships, grants, work study and loans for 4-year college, 2-year college and trade and vocational schools.
• Chaffey College is free for the first 2 years if you complete your FAFSA and submit a Panther Promise
• Cal Grants (FREE Money) – UC - $12,000+, CSU – $5,700+, Private College $9,000+ annually
• Pell Grants (FREE Money) - worth up to $6,000
• There is a middle-class scholarship for families that make less than $191,000 – up to 40% off tuition.
Foster youth can get a Chafee Grant from the state worth $6,000 (FREE Money)
• Recruited college athletes must complete a FAFSA too!!!
Keep a lookout at the bottom of our future newsletters for expanded opportunities for tutoring. If you have a student who would be interested in getting PAID to help tutor in the library, please have them reach out firstname.lastname@example.org

We are partnered with the BLU Educational Foundation. If you have a senior that could use a college mentor (free of charge) to help them through finding a college , they can get help throughout the entire process. They are also able to help focus on HBCU's if that is something you are interested in for your student. See attached forms for COLLEGE EXODUS PROJECT and MEDIA RELEASE FORM for this opportunity. These forms would get turned in to my office (ACHIEVEMENT OFFICE - A BLDG). Below is the information regarding each form:
This form allows our advisors to get to know the students along with their college and career aspirations. We offer scholarships for students in our program so at one point it will ask for their social media pages but that's just so we can tag them on instagram if they are awarded one!
This form allows us to look at your grades so that we may better assist you with your preparation towards college and your future career goals You do not have to put your SSN, leave that blank.
This form is saying that you and your parents are ok with us taking pictures of you at the White Coat Ceremony and at potential field trips and meet ups if COVID 19 clears before the program ends.
I will email you the College Workshop Schedule at a later time but here is the link to our Weekly Workshops. Tuesday & Wednesday from 6pm-7pmhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83164245530
