Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” As the song lyrics state, children love the magical moments of Christmas. They are enthralled by the bright shining lights, the delicious delicacies of the season, and the overall friendlier atmosphere it seems to elicit from all. We as adults often are captivated by similar responses to the season.
In the spirit of the season, we attempt to capture the real reason that we celebrate the Christmas season through the various December prayers and activities here at B.V.M. Certainly the student's Christmas concerts that occurred helped put us into the Christmas mood. However, our children realize the true meaning of Christmas through the religion classes held with Sr. Alicia and their homeroom teachers. I am also happy to announce that I am expecting my second child, due in July 2020. I have already been working on what that transition will look like in for the next school year, including a full-time assistant principal!
It was just three years ago when we underwent our School Improvement Process through the Office of Catholic Schools (OCS) of the Archdiocese of Chicago. At that time, we did a thorough investigation of our Catholic Identity, Academic Excellence, and School Vitality. From this process, we have been in constant communication over the needs of B.V.M. and what more can occur for the success of this school and all students!
Recently, OCS and Big Shoulders Fund signed onto an external contract that includes Maternity B.V.M. as a "covered school". Basically, this process allows us to examine the above areas as an ongoing process under the financial control of Big Shoulders. Luckily, this means that Maternity B.V.M. School will not close for the next 10 years! Even though the change is effective in January, Human Resources and Legal policies will remain consistent with the Archdiocese of Chicago for the next 10 years. Moreover, teacher contracts and evaluations will remain aligned to OCS policy. This opportunity has been a blessing that will allow all stakeholders to see how much more B.V.M. can grow and what improvements can be made in the immediate future. I am excited to share all of this good news and more in the coming months.
As it is easy to be caught up in the secular part of Christmas, turn to the children and they will guide and remind us that we celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. May He be in your hearts in all that you do during this “most wonderful time of the year.” I look forward to seeing you all again on January 6, 2020!
I wish all our Maternity B.V. M. families a Holy and Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
