PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
WEEK ENDING IN 10/01/2021
Dear OSES Family Members,
This coming Thursday marks the end of the fourth quarter. Even though we all made unexpected adjustments and faced uncharted challenges, I feel the students, staff, and parents have persevered. Students, staff, and parents will be recognized for their efforts in January for the accomplishments of the first semester.
Thank you to our Parent Volunteer Organization (PVO) who sponsored a lunch for our staff this week. They partnered with a locally owned Latin restaurant in support of the community and in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. The PVO also is sponsoring the upcoming Sprit Week.
OSES is proud to announce that we are incorporating National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) into our program. The NEHS recognizes outstanding academic achievement, encourages personal responsibility, meaningful service to the school and community, and essential leadership skills. Details of the program are forthcoming.
One goal of OSES is to have all students actively involved in the school. We have several competition teams, academic clubs, and many opportunities for students to get involved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with your ideas or comments on this accomplishing this goal. We want to make ensure you that OSES is providing each student a chance to shine and grow.

KINDERGARTEN
This week Kindergarten went on a journey through Hispanic countries from all over the world!! We ate empanadas, made papel picado, butterflies from Bolivia and most importantly learned about culturally appropriate activities, lifestyles and how we can work with each other.
On a funny note, Salsa dancing does not mean dancing in Salsa!!
FIRST
This week we learned about the past, present, and future. We learned that timelines can show events in order. We learned that school calendars can show special events and holidays.
In science, we are working on matter and movement. We can sort objects into color, shape, size, weight, temperature, and more. We can describe how objects move in many ways. Objects can move in a straight line, a zig zag, back and forth, up and down, round and round motion and more. We know the difference between a push and a pull. Ask us to show you!
Have a great weekend!

In music class, we went outside to rehearse our group compositions on the percussion instruments, then performed them for each other!
SPECIALS
In character education, we worked on collaboration and communication. We focused on using whole-body listening to talk with each other and working together in groups. We also talked about the difference between fixed and growth mindset and the power of yet.
In Ms Scales’ PE: grades k-2 we worked on locomotor movements and nutrition. In grades 3-5 we worked on a cooperative team challenge. The students worked on teamwork, communication, strategy, and skill work during these activities!
This was Mrs. Scales’ last week at OSES. I want to thank everyone for the amazing memories over the last 5 years. I would love to keep in touch! My email is Emiley.stapleton@gmail.com. I hope you had as much fun in PE as I did. Have a magical rest of the year!!
This week in Mrs. Molnar’s class we are working with scoops! We are working on our hand eye coordination and even trying some trick shots! We even got to play a game trying to shoot them into some buckets!
In STEM Lab, each grade level created a different engineering design based on what we have been learning in Science. K and 1st built cars to test force. 2nd grade created Playdough using their knowledge of solids and liquids. 3rd grade worked with light by making shadow puppets. 4th grade discussed renewable energy and made wind cars. 5th grade will be engineering next week. This week they worked out a STEM problem using Math.

FALL PHYSICAL DESIGN CONTEST
November 1st through December 15th, 2021 – Sponsored by Gamewright, Ravensburger, and Calliope Games
Physical games, whether card, dice, or board, present great opportunities to connect, compete, and learn from others. In the Fall Physical Game Design Competition, students will engage in a hands-on STEM experience with their friends and classmates. The Competition will encourage learning, computational thinking, and fellowship, as well as many other 21st-century skills. This virtual experience will enable K-12 students to learn more about game development and practice critical thinking while expanding their portfolios.
All submissions are due by 11:59 pm PST on December 15th, 2021. More information coming soon!
