Word Walls
Word walls are popping up everywhere at Oakwood! Thanks to all the team leaders who took the time to fill out the survey I sent in order to get an idea of how it is going for everyone overall. 100% of those who responded already have word walls up or are working toward getting one started soon. Thank you for diving in to better support vocabulary instruction at our campus. If you have further questions or need help getting started, please e-mail me. I can even arrange to meet with you if you would like.
Here are some examples of our Oakwood word walls:
StuCo
BOXTOPS
Monday - StuCo reps needed during Success classes - bring lunch and Boxtops. They will be counting and bagging until they are done. Students may be asking you if they can miss a class in the afternoon. If that's okay with you, great. If not, tell them no.
Wristbands to support the Red Ribbon themes will be sold all week in the cafeteria during lunches. $1 each. StuCo will be working on sales so they may be asking to leave 3rd or 4th period a few minutes early to get ready to sell.
FALL FESTIVAL 5:30 - 7:30
Supplies for Fall Fest will be delivered Wednesday during the day. StuCo will be available to help with set up after school. Just let me know. Email me. The phone extension doesn't work unless you go through the office.
Salyer's Math Talk
We often focus on the development of academic language for our English Language Learners. Many or our students that are not considered ELL's share many of the same problems with academic language acquisition as our ELL's. Students who have limited exposure to academic language outside of school tend to have poor reading comprehension in academic situations. Academic language is key in the ability to master content.
I encourage you to read the following article about the academic language of Mathematics. Think of your ELL students and your students who struggle in mastering content. The use of word walls and interactive word walls would be a great step toward developing the academic language of all or our students.
AVID
Please make plans now to attend our Site Team Meeting on Tuesday.

Trick or treat, help and seek, share with others something good and sweet! (to promote positive student behavior)
Explain one behavior "TRICK" you have learned to use that is helpful when managing a difficult student or behavior.
How does it work?
Why is it effective?
Is there a connection between this "TRICK" and building a positive relationship with your students or classes?
What is it?
