#WhateverItTakes Recognition
Charting the Course Reflection Data Share
IPDP Share out by grade-level homeroom teams
The BLT has a number of responsibilities. Please review these responsibilities and consider applying. The application window closes Monday, May 20th.
• The BLT will meet during the summer to analyze data, write the PD plan, and study research-based strategies that will be incorporated into PD.
• There will be at least three cadre days during the school year next year that you will need to participate in. Cadre may be held at ESC or another location. Cadre is led by the directors of elementary education or secondary education and curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
• There may be other times that it is necessary to meet in order to submit reports, analyze data, and plan PD. You will be paid for your time. However, there may be additional preparation that you will need to make in order to lead PD. This additional time requirement will not be paid time.
• You must be willing to lead and support change initiatives in the building. You will need to lead using the 21 responsibilities of Balanced Leadership.
• You must be willing to lead PD on Mondays.
• You should be a team-player and be able to be open-minded and receptive to new ideas and strategies.
• You should be comfortable supporting the goals of the building and district and able to communicate that to your peers.
• You must be a high-implementer of research-based instructional practices. By being on the BLT, you should be a leader in the implementation of the strategies studied in PD. Often times, we may learn about a strategy and ask the BLT to implement it with the students prior to sharing the information with the staff.
• Your relationships with other teachers should be viewed as professional and supportive.
Feedback on Today's Drill
mailto:pacea@live.siouxcityschools.com
Here is the feedback gathered from today's observers:
- Took 11 minutes for the first students to arrive at HBC, which is the relocation site.
- PE went to the baseball field, could they have gone into the wrestling room?
- Several classrooms had doors that were unlocked, which could allow access.
- Yes, you could break out a classroom window in the event of an intruder using chairs or stools.
- Yes, the science storage rooms in the science classrooms can be used for safe rooms if need be.
- Heartland Baptist Church (2201 W 19th St, Sioux City, IA 51103) is east of West High School, on 19th St. It is not directly across from West Middle School. It is on the North side of the road on the next hill to our East on 19th St.
- Several subs indicated that the teachers they were here in the building for today had no safety information for them: including fire drill procedures, tornado procedures, or safety procedures.
We will continue to work to ensure West is Safe! Thanks for your efforts in making today's drill run smoothly.
Advice for our Wolverine Future Teachers
Dear West High Staff:
As the school year is closing, I wanted to reach out to all of you and ask you if you have any advice for upcoming teachers that you could provide.
I teach an education class at The Career Academy, and I am looking to compile a list of advice from staff in our school district that students can use as they continue their journey pursuing a degree in the education field. I have quite a few West High students who are enrolled in the class, and they would love to hear from you. I am looking for insight/advice from anyone who works in the school system. Feel free to be serious, funny, realistic, etc.
If you are willing to share your wisdom with the next generation of educators, send me an email, and I will compile a list for the students. mailto:brycew@live.siouxcityschools.com
They love hearing your honest feedback.
Thanks again for all that you do!

Message from Jill Sharp regarding RedCats
The email is in reference to Redcat Speaker Systems that you have in various classrooms in your buildings that are used by students with a hearing impairment. Every year, Mike and I make sure that students with IEP’s that have Redcats written into their IEP’s have them in each of their classrooms. We would like the speaker systems to be returned to the library for the summer. This will make sure that the speakers and all of the parts are in one location and allow us to get the classrooms ready next year much quicker.
If you were given a Redcat Speaker at the beginning of this school year to use in your classroom for a student with a hearing impairment, please return the speaker and all of the parts to the media center in your building at the end of the school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please email either Jill Sharp or Mike Kilburn.
Items to include:
Redcat Speaker (There are white and black speakers)
Speaker plug-in cord
Microphone(s) and lanyard
Charger Block
Charger Block Plug-in cord
Extra cord that the grey microphones plug into the charger block.
Thank you for returning the Redcat Speakers, that will help us out immensely. This will allow us to outfit the classrooms for the students next year more quickly.

Technology Preparation for Summer Break
Preparation for Summer Break
Desktops, Laptops, iPads, Tablets, Copiers and Printers
1. Desktops
a. that won’t be used over the summer must be disconnected from power. Don’t disconnect other cables for example; mouse, video, speaker, and network.
b. can be covered with a cloth cover. Do not use plastic covers because they trap in moisture.
2. Laptops
a. along with power adapters that won’t be used over the summer must be disconnected from power and placed in a locked closet, cabinet or storeroom.
b. that belong on a cart must be returned to the cart because they might be reimaged or replaced over the summer.
c. assigned to Teachers may be taken home for the summer.
3. iPads and Tablets along with power adapters that won’t be used over the summer must be disconnected from power and placed in a locked closet, cabinet or storeroom.
4. Copiers and Printers that won’t be used over the summer must be disconnected from power.
5. If you have a computer problem, tape an Equipment Tag (see attachment) to it and create a ticket in HelpDesk.
6. Delete files and emails that you don’t need.
7. All software should be placed in a secure area.
Classroom Technology Equipment
1. All projectors (that are plugged into the wall), dual boards, RedCat audio enhancement systems, microphone chargers, Mobi’s, and document cameras that will not be used over the summer should be disconnected from power.
2. Dual board pens, projector remotes, RedCat audio enhancement systems, microphones, microphone chargers, Mobi’s, Mobi receivers and pens, document cameras, responders, and responder receivers should be stored in a locked closet, cabinet or storeroom.
3. If you find extra power adapters, cables, USB devices, mobi pens, board pens, or receivers put them into an envelope and send it to the Help Desk at ESC.
4. Removing the batteries from the responders has not been a SCCSD protocol, but the manufacturer does recommend it to prevent corrosion.
Teacher Moves, Retirements, and Resignations
1. If you are a teacher and you are moving to a different classroom or building . . .
a. take your laptop and power adapter with you
b. you can’t take student computers or any classroom equipment (audio enhancement systems, microphone chargers, Mobi’s, document cameras, and responders) to your new classroom. In fact it would be helpful if you would find all of your equipment, cords, receivers, etc. and put them in a box for the new teacher.
c. ask the Librarian at the new building to change the location of your laptop in the inventory system.
d. create a HelpDesk ticket to change the name of your laptop if you move to a new building.
2. If you are a teacher and you are leaving the district put your name and building onto two tags and tape a tag onto your laptop and a tag onto your power adapter. On your last day turn in your laptop and power adapter to the Registrar.
Phones
1. Staff that move to a different room within a building should take their phone with them. Their extension stays the same.
2. Staff that move to a different building must leave their phone in the classroom. They will receive the extension of the person he/she is replacing.
Close Reading - Invite Admin in for Observations
This researched-based strategy is effective in all content areas. For the rest of this year, each teacher should invite an administrator in to watch a Close Reading lesson. We are collecting walk-through data around this strategy 6-12 across the District.
When you implement this strategy please send an invitation to April and/or your evaluator. All teachers should send an invitation at least two times before the end of the year.
If you need more support in implementing this strategy, please reach out to Kristen or Tyson.
