Welcome to the 2021-22 School Year
From the Counseling Office
A Year of Perspective and Hope
Here we are. At the start a new school year, one that follows what is easily the most challenging year we've ever had. If you're like me, maybe you're experiencing some mixed emotions.
For some, it feels like a continuation of last year - masks and COVID protocols. For some, it feels daunting coming into a building you may never have set foot in before. For some, it's just another school year to look forward to the end of.
But, I was reminded last week that life is about perspective. We don't always get to choose our circumstances, but we do get to choose our attitude. If we reframe our "have tos" into "get tos", we open ourselves up to a world of opportunity, and I believe that this year is an incredible opportunity. A chance for a fresh start. A chance to recommit to our core beliefs. A chance to let go of old ideas that no longer hold value. A chance to ask for the impossible and see what amazing things we can make happen.
This summer, counselors met to write our Mission Statement. As far as I know, it's the first time we've had a Mission Statement for just our department, but as we step into this year full of possibility, we need a guidepost to help direct us as we work with our students. Here is what we wrote:
Rock Bridge Counselors serve ALL students by facilitating personal growth, inspiring hope, encouraging school and community connections, and preparing each student for success in an ever-changing world.
I want to take a minute to focus on "inspiring hope" because I believe hope is tied to perspective. This year, we want to inspire hope in our students by helping them adjust their perspective. We want them to believe in "get to" instead of "have to". We want them to believe there is possibility even in disappointment. We want them to believe in communism.
Wait. What?!
If you were skimming over the fluffy stuff, I probably have your attention now :) Let me explain.
If you're a fan of Ted Lasso, you may already get the reference, but let me set it up for those of you who've never seen the show. Ted Lasso is a college football coach who gets hired to coach a pro soccer team in England. More importantly though, he's is the epitome of kindness, optimism, and hope. After a rough game, he tells his team that what they need is to believe in communism...Rom-Communism, that is. Because, in romantic comedies, no matter the struggle, no matter how dark the forest the characters have to travel through, we have hope because we know it always works out in the end. "It may not work out how you think it will or how you hope it does," Ted says, "but believe me: It will work out exactly as it's supposed to."
My hope for all of you this year is that you keep the bigger story in mind. That even when you're going through the "dark forest", you hold onto the hope that it will work out exactly as it's supposed to. And when you start to forget, know that we are here to help you remember.
I'm so grateful I get to work with you all this year! Here's hoping it's the best year yet!

HOW TO READ YOUR SCHEDULE AND DETERMINE YOUR LUNCH SHIFT:
You can find your schedule in HomeAccess (HAC) under the Classes tab.
The Period will tell you which block the class meets. The Days column will tell you which day the class meets. Marking Periods tells you if the class is 1st semester (T2), 2nd semester (T3), or all year (T2, T3).
2nd block classes look a little different because they are tied to lunches
- Period 2A-2D = the class eats C lunch (C lunch = 2E)
- Period 2A-2B, 2D-2E = the class eats B lunch (B lunch = 2C)
- Period 2B-2E = the class eats A lunch (A lunch = 2A)
Need more clarification on your lunch shift? Please see the attached What Lunch Do I Have? document linked HERE 😊
You can use the Block Schedule Form (linked HERE) to write out your schedule in an easier-to-read format (example below)!
