A Message from the Principal
Dear Turrill Families,
Our students are learning about being thankful and showing gratitude during the month of November. Practicing gratitude has benefits that go beyond the few listed here. We hope you will join us in openly practicing gratitude and teaching our children about being thankful.
With gratitude,
Kelly Vangel

Fully Accessible Playground Opening This Week
Our fully accessible playground will have its grand opening this Thursday, November 3rd after a ribbon cutting ceremony. Thank you to the Lapeer Optimist Club for donating $45,000 to this amazing project. The playground will be open to our cognitively impaired students and students with mobility issues. More exciting news to come!
LCS Student Handbook Attendance Policy
Under state law, truancy referrals are made for students with excessive absences. Attendance letters are mailed following the 8th and 13th absence within a school year. A referral to truancy may be made following the 10th absence or tardy in a school year.

PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
Character Trait Work
Each month we are working on a different character trait to help shape student behavior positively. We have worked on kindness, confidence, and respect so far, and now we will be working on being thankful in November. Students learn about the character trait of the month in their classrooms and attend an assembly in which a picture book on the character trait is read and discussed.
BOLT Tickets
Students can earn BOLT tickets from adults throughout the school day for exhibiting positive behavior. Students can turn BOLT tickets in each week to earn prizes. If you would like to donate PBIS prizes to Turrill, we would really appreciate it. Prize examples include: pencils, erasers, fidgets, small games, small toys, etc.
Compliment Chains
Classrooms have compliment chains made out of paper links in their classrooms to measure compliments they receive from adults. When a class meets their personal goal, they enjoy a compliment party of their choice.
Students of the Month
Each month, teachers nominate one student from their class to be Student of the Month based on the character trait that was focused on. We celebrated our September Students of the Month by having a Candy Apple Bar.
September Student of the Month winners include: Julianna Coates, Leviticus Bell, Sawyer Keehn, Bennett Swartz-Beedle, Joey Haney, Charlotte Powell, Merida Payne, Kylan-Jay Northrop, Abigail VanDenBerg, Mason Wilcox, Keagen Badyrka, Damian Haney, Quintin Showler, Kayleigh Pettit, Iser Nickola, Courtney Hoskins, Alexander Thrower, and Cleopatra Robinson
November Reading Fun
Be on the lookout for November Reading Logs! Students have a goal of reading at home for at least 20 minutes every day and completing a reading log throughout the month. Reading at home with your child is part of Read-by-Grade Three Law.

LEAF 2nd Grade Future Me Program November 11, 2022
Dear Turrill Parent/Guardian,
We believe in our students’ future and feel strongly that it’s never too early to start preparing! We are very excited to announce the “Future ME!” Career Awareness Event, being held for our second grade student classrooms. This event will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Turrill.
The main focus of the grade level band for Grades K-3 is “Career Awareness." The event will include activities that allow students to learn information about themselves and introduce the world of work into their thinking.
We encourage the students to think of a career they might be interested in and dress up as they would if they had that career or bring a school appropriate prop/tool/picture representing a career of interest. We will have a short discussion based on participation. The students will play “Career Town” in Xello, a career exploration and planning platform, and participate in sessions with Community Helpers, learning about those careers.
