Principal Notes 09/11/2015
St. Cecilia School
Notes from the Principal
I want to thank everyone for the support and prayers for our school, staff, and students at the start of the year and as we continue working with our students. Things are off to a good start, but I do have a favor to ask all parents. Last year we moved the start of the school day to 8:25 a.m., so we would appreciate having you child in the building by 8:20 a.m. It takes a few minutes for them to stop at lockers and take care of other business before the day starts. We are trying to start our day with prayer as close to 8:25 a.m. as possible and it is nice if the students are in the room at this time. I hope your year is off to a good start as you try to balance the various fall activities with the school schedule. Please remember you are always welcome to stop in and visit class or eat lunch. If eating school lunch, please call Mrs. Thompson in the office before 10 a.m. Please call if you have any questions.
On Friday, September 18th, we will holding our first jeans day of the 2015-16 school year. For a suggested donation of $1, you may wear jeans with your uniform polo shirt. Our donation will be made to the Foster Grandparent Program. If your children have talked about Grandma Jolene, she is our Foster Grandparent volunteer who started volunteering at St. Cecilia School last year.
The Foster Grandparent Program provides service opportunities to seniors who are 55 and older and on a limited income. Foster Grandparents receive a stipend for volunteering at either an elementary school or day care center for a minimum of 15 hours a week. The goal of the program is to provide one-on-one support to children who have special needs by assisting with reading, small group work and/or specific tutoring activities. If you are interested in learning more about the Foster Grandparent Program, please call 515-238-7697 (Boone, Dallas, and Story Counties).
I know families have heard of the Scrip program at St. Cecilia’s and I encourage that you take advantage of this opportunity. There is additional information provided in these announcements but I wanted to encourage you to take advantage of this program. You can use the program to lower the cost of your child’s tuition or to benefit the tuition assistance program for the students that attend St. Cecilia. If you have any questions about Scrip, please review the attachments or contact Bev Williams at email@example.com.
Comprehensive School Improvement Plan & Annual Progress Report
Each year schools across the state of Iowa complete information with the state that reports school progress and the goals of the school for the upcoming school year. This information can be found in the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) and the Annual Progress Report (APR) report. We did meet our goals at St. Cecilia’s this year and continue to provide a quality educational program that is one of the outstanding experiences for our students in the state of Iowa. We appreciate your support in the past and have set our goals for the upcoming year to continue the tradition of outstanding academic achievement. The requirements of the state reporting are focused on academic achievement so the goals reflect this but we continue to strive for more than just outstanding academic achievement for our internal goals. We are proud of our academic achievement but we are concerned about more than academics, we are a school that provides a strong family atmosphere and helps to support your efforts in the faith formation for your children. We will continue to serve the whole child as we set high goals for ourselves and the students at St. Cecilia School.
For the parents that would like more information on either of the reposts, CSIP or AYP, please contact me and I will provide the materials to you.

STEM Club News
What is STEM Club? It is a free, afterschool Club available to all Saint Cecilia School students (K-5). We learn about STEM topics and careers through experiments, visits by ISU groups and businesses in the area. Most of all, we have fun!
STEM Club events will be communicated through the weekly Principal Notes. There will be a link to sign your child up included in the notes. Generally we meet once a month and generally on Fridays afterschool. We are a parent volunteer-run organization. If your child attends STEM, we ask that you consider volunteering to help with a session 1-2 times per school year.
We will be kicking off our STEM Club festivities in October. On October 2, Dr. Fred Janzen will be bringing some friends to visit. We will have turtles, lizards, frogs, and snakes to learn about! October 28 (Wednesday) we will have a visit from the ISU Toying with Technology group where we will learn about simple machines. Please check with your child to see if she/he is interested in these events. A sign-up for the October 2nd STEM session will be in next Friday’s notes.
