President's Message
Hello Hiteon Families!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest. It is always so fun to see the kids' creativity come out in their pumpkin projects. Congratulations to our winners. To see a video of all the entries, head over to the PTC Facebook page.
As we head into this season of thanksgiving, we are mindful of what a wonderful community we have in Hiteon. So many of you have contacted me, asking how you can help at Hiteon. Plans are in the works to slowly bring volunteers back into the building starting in January. Details to come! For now, enjoy this season of family, friends, and togetherness.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Kristin Glover, Hiteon PTC President

November is Native American/Alaskan Native (NAAN) Heritage Month
As we have learned this month, this is Kalapuyan Land. You can search the Hiteon address yourself, or any other North, Central or South American location at native-land.ca, to see to whom that land originally belonged. Some areas of Asia, Australasia and Africa are mapped as well.
In celebration of both NAAM Heritage Month and Veterans Day, the National Museum of the American Indian is putting on an online exhibition called Why We Serve. It highlights the experience of Native American veterans of the United States Armed Forces, honoring "the generations of Native Americans who have served...since the American Revolution."
Other ways to learn about and celebrate Native American heritage and history
The National Indian Education Association has assembled educational activities for grades PK-2, 3-5 and 6-12. Check them out during the long Thanksgiving break, create your own woven basket, learn about Navajo rug designs or constellations, and maybe make a cornhusk doll or try fry bread!
Learn about the history of the Native American Code Talkers of WW1 and WW2.
Try some Thanksgiving recipes shared by Native Chefs from across Indian Country here using foods native to North America that you may have never tried before!
And of course, elementary and picture book recommendations (as recommended by the National Education Association (NEA))!
(Our Place): This IS Kalapuyan Land
Today we concluded the outdoor exhibit of the Museum at (Our Place): This IS Kalapuyan Land. Over the past 2 weeks, we displayed artwork by contemporary Indigenous artists who are descendants of Native tribes. Through their artwork, we learned how the artists use their culture and varying techniques and mediums to bring the history of their ancestors to life. You can learn more about the exhibit and the artists online at the Five Oaks Museum website.
The Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s next meeting will be in January 2022.
We want to feature our community's cultures and traditions
The Hawk Squawk will feature international celebrations occurring in the coming weeks. We would love for a parent or guardian to help write these each month. Interested? Please contact the Diversity & Inclusion Committee to offer your assistance.
Are you interested in having your family featured in the next Hawk Squawk? Send your pictures to the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and we will have 3-5 pictures from the Hiteon community's family celebrations each month.
