Coronavirus COVID-19
As you are likely aware, one case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was confirmed in Jefferson County over the last week. We want to assure you that the Chimacum School District is prepared and has an emergency response plan in place. Please note that there are no confirmed cases of the illness in the Chimacum School District.
Jefferson County Health Department is not advising cancellation of events, field trips, or school closures at this time. However, we are closely monitoring the health and attendance of our students and staff and preparing for any potential disruptions to school operations in an effort to minimize the spread of the disease. We are also taking extra precautions to disinfect surfaces in our schools per recommended health department protocols.
Should we be required to close school or cancel events in the future, we will notify the community via email, District and school Facebook, and posts on our website.
Please use the link below to read the latest Chimacum School District communication on the Coronavirus.
FIRST LEGO League Competition-Semi Finals Again!
Following our STEAM mission, all third grade through sixth grade classrooms are receiving robotics instruction and are offering three competitive FIRST LEGO robotics teams made up of fifth and sixth graders that competed locally and regionally.
Building on last year's successes, two of our three competitive FIRST Lego teams did extremely well at the FLL competition on Bainbridge Island against other teams from schools in the area. Two of our teams then advanced to the semi-finals at Amazon headquarters in Seattle! We are extremely proud of our Robotics teams and their families that supported our robotics program. Of course, our Robotics teams wouldn’t be able to happen without support from our dedicated teacher-coaches! Thank you to Ms. Mendoza, Ms. Moseley, Mr. Gonzalez, and Mr. Brennan for your support of our students and Chimacum Elementary's robotics program!
Robotics Fair - Saturday, April 18th from 1:00-3:00 PM
All spectators and supporters from around the area are welcome to our second annual Chimacum Robotics Fair! Students will be presenting and demonstrating their robotic expertise. Come see how our school is growing with our STEAM mission, where problem solving grows minds through innovation, collaboration, and grit! Please contact the school office if you would like to volunteer or contribute to help support this event.

Chimacum eSports Club!
Chimacum Elementary School is offering a 6th grade eSports Club! This club gives students an opportunity to play games competitively at school with their fellow classmates.
What is an eSports Club and what game will kids play?
eSports, known as Electronic Sports, is competitive multiplayer video gaming. Colleges and Universities have eSports teams and they give eSports scholarships! Chimacum High School is going to offer eSports to give Chimacum students who love to play video games a chance to compete for their school as part of a team! Middle School has an eSports League so 6th graders are able to play for their school even in elementary school. At CES, 6th graders will play MINECRAFT.
When Does the CES eSports Club meet?
MONDAYS and FRIDAYS from 7:30 am to 8:30 am in room 410. On Friday, February 21, Chimacum 6th graders were able to play Minecraft games with kids from Guildford, Surrey, England! Since Surrey is eight hours ahead of Chimacum their kids are getting home when we’re starting our club! If not for the Club Minecraft UK, finding schools to play with at 7:30 am PST would be nearly impossible. In the future, if we do find schools to play, we might just have an after-school match. That could be fun!

Chimacum Elementary Cell Phone Policy
In order to create a positive learning environment for all students, personal electronic devices (PED's) may not be used on campus. This includes iPads, MP3 players, phones or other hand held music or gaming devices. Chimacum School District has invested in one-to-one technology and each student has access to a computer throughout the day to support their education. If a student brings a PED to school, it may be confiscated and held until a parent comes to school to get it.
We understand that many parents choose to have their students carry a cell phone for communication purposes in the event of emergencies or changes in plans. However, in order to not disrupt the school day any student bringing a cell phone to school must keep it turned off and out of sight during school hours. If a student is seen using a cell phone during school hours the following steps are taken:
- Students will be given a reminder of the school policy.
- Staff members will confiscate the device and it will be given back to the student at the end of the day. Parents will be notified by the staff member.
- The device will be confiscated and kept in the office until a parent/guardian of the student comes to school to pick it up.
During school hours, if a parent/guardian needs to get a message to their student, they are welcome to call the office at 360-302-5855 and the message will be delivered to the student as soon as possible and in a manner that will not disrupt learning.
Smarter Balanced Testing (SBA)
This spring, your student will take the Smarter Balanced tests in math and English language arts. Students in grades 5 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). The results from these tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be ready for college or career. Most students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests April 28th- May 21st.
Tips to prepare your student for state testing
- Become familiar with standards specific to your child’s grade level with the national PTA parent guides and parent guides to grade level expectations.
- Monitor your child’s progress with school work and ask teachers for activities to do at home to help prepare for tests and improve proficiency.
- Explore the practice tests.
- Explain to your child that the tests might initially be more challenging than previous tests and that they’re designed to help them succeed after graduation.
- Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home and make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before a test day.
- Sleep is important; rest well prior to testing days.
For more information about the test visit: https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing-overview, and click on the name of the test.

Please call our school's office or email your classroom teacher if you have questions about state testing.
Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your student. We want your student to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities.
