Workforce Development is Here to Help! - Workforce Student Testimonial
“I am Dan Estes, an old geek, who is good with computers. I worked uninterrupted in technology for 31 years. Then I lost my job and discovered that the technical skills I had (IBM mainframes and midrange computers) were not in demand in the Seattle area. I am also a husband and father with 4 dogs, a parrot, a canary, 2 rats and a mortgage. I love living in the Pacific Northwest, so relocation was not an option.
I was introduced to Worker Retraining at the “Paying for College” workshop offered by WorkSource. I initially thought it would not apply to my situation, after all, I was skilled in technology so how could I apply for “retraining” in technology, something I felt I already did? Jayne Heyde encouraged me to apply anyway and I certainly met the criteria of being a dislocated worker. She also helped to apply for Washington Unemployment Training Benefits even though I had passed the official deadline for applying.
The Worker Retraining program, along with Training Benefits allowed me to re-tool myself with more modern technology skills. I completed 5 quarters full time at Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Computing and Software Development. I earned certificates in Software Development, Web Development and C++/C# programming.
I am now back to looking for a full-time job and am very optimistic that I will find something soon.”
