Pier 24 News
Dear UMAC Parents,
Tomorrow (Saturday, February 20th) is our annual Woods Creek Winter Carnival. Our phenomenal PTO will host this family fun day from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. A special thank you to all the committee members who have worked endlessly to put this event together for our students to enjoy. Also, thank you to everyone who donated prizes and baked goods! This event would not be possible if not for your generosity and support. Hope to see many of you there!

Shared Reading
In shared reading, students listened to a historical fiction text titled Freedom School, Yes! This story was based off of the events that took place in June 1964 when African Americans were campaigning for their right to vote in Mississippi. Our team had a lot of indepth discussions about segregation, equality and hostility. At the end of the week, we wrote a response proving that the main character, Jolie, had changed from the beginning to the end of the story. Can your UMAC student tell you about Jolie’s character change?
Social Studies
This week we concluded our study of Colonial Williamsburg. Students finished off learning about a variety of trades that were an important part of life in this time period. We also stopped off at the Governor’s Palace to learn more about the government in this colony as it was Virginia’s capital. Be sure to ask your child about some interesting facts they learned while we embarked on our virtual field trip to Williamsburg! Our team loved exploring Williamsburg through a fun, interactive website (www.history.org/kids)
Published Books
Earlier this week your child brought home a note regarding our special writing project that we have been working hard on at school. Each student will receive one free copy of their book; however, you also have the option to purchase additional copies if you wish. All students must return this form to receive even their free copy. Please be sure to check the “No” box and include your signature even if you are not ordering any additional copies.
This weekend, your UMAC writer will be bringing home a draft of their rewritten fairy tale. As a special writing assignment, we are asking your to conference with your creative writer about their story. Please use the rubric that was sent home to guide your discussion.
