Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching
In your curriculum - Get Concrete to spend less time teaching the abstract!
Kinder
Unit 10: Measurement
Heavy or light? Long or short? How much can something hold? Weight, length, and capacity. Give students ample time to use real items to compare. This comparison skill plays a big role in math and students need to see a lot of concrete examples and have time to work with them.
Step - Up Unit
Please check out the resources in your new Step Up Unit and give feedback. These were not a part of the original curriculum for Kinder.
First Grade
Unit 11: Money and Financial Literacy
There are a couple of great PBL's around, please let me know if you are going to implement one so that I can showcase your team! First grade standards focus on the value of the coins and being able to make equal trades for values, like 5 pennies for 1 nickel. Show the students real coins under your ELMO during the test so that they can see them.
Step - Up Unit
Please check out the resources in your new Step Up Unit and give feedback. These were not a part of the original curriculum for First Grade.
Second Grade
Unit 10: Money and Financial Literacy
Students will count coins to $1.00, and use the decimal point and dollar sign as well as the cent sign to represent the values. Spend time with real coins and allow students find efficient ways to count them.
Unit 11: Multiplication and Division
This is the concrete before the abstract. Model, create, and describe contextual situations. Kids must have manipulatives for this Unit. Some students can work the operations mentally, let them, but also make them show understanding with manipulatives.
Step - Up Unit
Please check out the resources in your new Step Up Unit and give feedback. These were not a part of the original curriculum for Second Grade.

Data and Graphs
PreK students can make student graphs with their bodies. Have students take a cube in their hand before the lesson. Then graph the students by the color of their cubes. Have students put their cubes together to represent their physical graph. Help students transfer their physical graph and their cubes make the same graph. I would love to see your work!
Workstation Ideas
Students in second grade can easily see groups of small numbers on the rekenrek that will help them 'see' the fives and tens once a quantity is made, same with the beaded number line. Very cool!
Make a Comparing workstation.
Comparing station-in your step up units there are place value materials. Comparing quantities is a great way to extend for your kids who already 'get it'.
Technology Tips
ABCYa.com is in the news again! For PreKinders, I love the Birthday Counting Candle game for numbers to 10. Top Marks had a great ordering and sequencing game for different number quantities - check it out! Sheppard Software rules for fruit splat coins! Pearson Realize has a virtual manipulative that illustrates Multiplication using arrays. Have a good resource? Please share it! Thank you for all you do!
