60 years of Catholic Education
Since the beginning of the current school year we have focused on teaching our students an appreciation for the gift that OLQH school is to our community. It has been a great deal of fun for me as I have learned much about the school’s history, and I hope you have as well. We will continue to teach our students about the rich tradition of a quality educational program rooted in our Catholic faith is a legacy of excellence.
I would like to thank all those who attended our annual auction in support of this legacy of educational excellence at OLQHS. A special note of thanks to all those who graciously gave up their time and talents to serve on our various auction committees; Beth Melancon, Jennifer Garcille, Kelli Wimberly, Erin Howle, Laura Beth Prejean, Marcie Harper, Amy Dufrene, Emily Irwin, April Morton, Lori Sansivirini, Emily Irwin, Katie Thompson, Suzanne McCann, Angel Thompson-Broussard, Molly LeCronier, Lindsey Caraway, Emily Stine and Erin Shamburger. As you can tell, it takes a lot of dedicated people to make an event of such a magnitude a success. It was an incredible night and we all owe you all such a debt of gratitude.
These efforts to support our school will enable us to continue to serve our Lord by living and sharing his message of love and gratitude with our next generation of leaders. My prayer for all moving forward is that we all allow our light to continue to shine.
Peace,
Trevor Donnelly

The first grade team would like to thank each and every one of you for all the reading at home. First Grade is such an amazing time to watch your child blossom as a reader and writer. Kuddos to your children who continue give their very best to get this far!! BE ON THE LOOKOUT for future AUTHORS!!!
We also have been enjoying learning about animals and their environments. We will be ready to explore the zoo on February 12th.
2nd Grade
3rd Grade
4th Grade
The 4th graders enjoyed their annual field trip to our State Capitol in Baton Rouge and the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum!
5th Grade
Fifth graders enjoyed their annual Mining Lab field trip! Mrs. Carol Rabb from Baton Rouge has made her 11th visit to our school traveling in her gem mining bus. She travels from school to school sharing her expertise of rocks and minerals and natural resources. Students went into the mobile gem mine where they sluiced the ore in water flumes to discover their very own gem collection. They gathered over 14 different kinds of genuine minerals such as rose quartz, hematite, pyrite, garnet, fluorite, tiger's eye, agates and several kinds of quartz crystals to name a few. To add to the experience, students created a graph of their minerals and then used the data to do additional math! Fifth graders also researched info about a specific mineral. Minerals are used in many of the products we use every day. They found out the products that are made with their mineral and created a commercial about it. They had to use persuasion to sell their product along with the physical properties of their mineral. Some students made videos while others created power point presentations.
6th Grade
In November our 6th grade took their annual trip to the Sinai Jewish Temple in Lake Charles. Recently, 6th grade teacher, Dawn Courville, received notice that the Temple was placing a brick in their courtyard in honor of her and the 6th grade for their "efforts in promoting tolerance and understanding." We are so proud of Mrs. Courville and her many field trips to the Temple as part of her teaching on world history and religion.

The Art World
Congratulations to our new Artsonia Hall of Fame students. We have two new Kindergarten students in the Hall of Fame--Beau and Relic. Ella in Second Grade is new to the Hall of Fame. It is very exciting to have two new members from the 8th Grade Fine Arts Survey--Alana and Gabriella. Great work, everyone!
In the Elementary School we are all about winter and snow. Kindergarten made some adorable penguins chatting with the snow falling around them. They made fabulous Mardi Gras masks with their own design (and glitter!). Check out Artsonia to see their work. We are now working very hard on Valentine's for some we love. In First Grade we are doing a study in perspective. They drew their pictures with a white pencil color on black construction paper. In the foreground (big) they drew a snowman and in the background they drew a house (small). Why? The farther away an object is from YOUR eye, the smaller it looks. They are coloring with cray pas. You can see them on Artsonia and in the Fine Arts Building Hallway.
The Second Grade is also using cray pas (oil pastels) to color their Emperor Penguins floating on an ice floe with two icebergs and a sunrise/sunset in the background. They are beautiful. Soon we will begin our wearable Mardi Gras Masks for the Kindergarten Mardi Gras Parade. Third Graders have been drawing "real" animals, etc. They have drawn insects (or snails), turkeys, and now are drawing penguins or seals with pencil colors. They are doing a great job!
Fourth Graders, who are praying for snow, hand cut some gorgeous snowflakes. We turned some of the snowflakes into crosses. They are now designing, decorating, coloring, glittering, and feathering their own wearable Mardi Gras Masks. There will be lots of candy thrown in their direction with these great masks.
The Seventh Grade Art Rotation class created marvelous Zentangled Mardi Gras Masks. We had Mr. Jay Bowdon, a local artist, come and show the students how to make an Abstract in his style. Each student is making their own Abstract. Mr. Bowdon will return when they are through to critique their work in the Comment section of Artsonia.
The 8th Grade Fine Arts Survey has been learning wonderful things!. They participated in an 8th Grade wide study of the great artist, Michelangelo and learned so many things about this profoundly religious genius. We also had a very special guest speaker, Mr. Jay Penfield, who spoke to the students about Theater. Mr Penfield is an Assistant Lighting Director who is now in New York working on "Kiss Me Kate". He taught the students how to analyze a script and then design either the costumes or the scenery for a play. Half of the class is doing "Hansel and Gretel" and the other half is doing "Jack and the Beanstalk". The costume designs and scenery designs will be displayed in the Fine Arts Building, as well as appearing on Artsonia.
Remember, art class is busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!!
Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Mardi Gras,
Brenda Foshee, Art
