Principal's Letter
Greetings Lake Windward Elementary Families,
Thank you for your patience as we navigated the first few weeks of the school year. As you know, we welcomed two teachers to the LWE family in the last couple of weeks. Mrs. Anna Ryberg is our new second grade teacher, and Ms. Morgan Hall is our new third grade teacher. They both came to us from nearby schools where they were teaching the same grade levels as they are at LWE. They have jumped right in and started instruction with their students. I have enjoyed watching them in action already!
On Tuesday, September 3rd, we had an RFF day for staff professional development. Our teachers engaged in learning activities which focused on instructional strategies which promote inquiry. We also worked on how to use student work samples to adjust instructional practices and plan for differentiation.
Our PTO continues to spoil our teachers and staff! The week before last they hosted a lunch courtesy of our business partner Vito's. They have also started a snack tray for staff to grab a quick bite to eat when they need a pick me up! We appreciate all of our PTO volunteers, parents who support the PTO and our community business partners! This week, you can support our school by going to Chili's for dinner on Thursday night for LWE's Spirit Night. Hope to see you there!
Warm regards,
Julie Morris

Our school will be recognized at the school board meeting tomorrow night for this achievement.
Also, LWE is the highest ranked Fulton County School on Niche.com as well as Schooldigger.com. I am so proud of our students and teachers!

Character Education
Character education is about teaching children to accept, know, and live up to their moral duties and obligations. It is teaching children to make good ethical decisions and sound judgments. The goal of character education is to help children develop good qualities that will enable them to flourish personally, intellectually, and socially. It fosters characteristics that will help students be successful as citizens and with the academic curriculum.
At Lake Windward, we have a Character Education Program for our school where our students learn a new character word each month. Teachers will give out stickers for each character trait when they see a student exhibiting the character trait of the month. At the end of the month, they will nominate the student/s who exhibited the character trait the most. When a student is recognized, the student will be recognized on the morning announcements, have their names in the parent newsletter, and receive a certificate.
Here is our list of words we will be acknowledging this year: September-Responsibility, October-Respect, November-Trustworthiness, December-Leadership, January-Perseverance, February-Kindness, March-Patience, April-Enthusiasm, May-Sportsmanship
A Note From the Clinic
Is Your Child Too Sick for School?
Early in the morning it is often difficult to decide if your child is too sick to attend school. With minor symptoms, many times you cannot tell if your child is going to get better or worse during the course of the school day.
Your child should not be sent to school if he/she has any of the following:
Temperature of 100.4 or over within the past 24 hours. Students who have a fever of 100.4 or greater are not permitted to attend school.
Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours.
A sore or discharging eye or ear.
An undiagnosed rash.
Strep throat or any disease requiring antibiotics, unless the child has been on the antibiotics for at least 24 hours.
A very frequent cough.
Persistent pain (stomach, ear, throat, etc.)
When a student becomes ill at school, has a fever, a potential contagious/communicable illness or a more serious health problem, the parent/guardian will be notified to pick-up their child immediately. The parent/guardian MUST ARRANGE for the student to be taken home. A note from a healthcare provider may be requested by the school before your child can return to school.
Students who are sick, possibly contagious and/or have a fever of 100.4° or MUST NOT be sent to school. In order to return to school, a student should be free of fever, vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours, and not require medications to reduce fever. In some cases, students must be cleared by a healthcare provider before returning to school. In addition, there may be other health issues when the student may not return to school unless cleared by a healthcare provider and a note must be provided (i.e. contagious illnesses or chronic diarrhea).
If you are in doubt about whether or not your child is sick, please err on the side of caution and keep your child at home.
