Spring 2016
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Ahhhhh.....my first Presidential season comes to a close.....just kidding..... I have just started planning for our YEAR END BEACH PARTY, Confirmed the room for our AGM, Looking forward to meeting with our accountant for year end, am in the midst of reorganizing our 20 years of Club paperwork, looking to book summer camps, looking forward to seeing Wade's purchase list for NEW trampolines.....it's the job that keeps on giving.
I am so happy to report that Wade's hours of grant application time were spent wisely... SSFSC just received $6000 from Funtastic - giving us the funds to begin Phase One of our Trampoline Facility Proposal. Continued below...
Make sure you read right to the bottom of the newsletter....there is lots of news, plenty of pictures and some important dates to put in your daytimers!
But first my personal look back on how I got into all of this!
For most of us this freestyle life started because our kids spent most of their time on the side of the runs hitting every jump they could find. However, what started as a new program for the kids has quickly turned into a passion for many of us. I say passion because not only is this club filled with amazing programs and activities for our kids to participate in, but it is also filled with fantastic families who spend their "spare time" together on the ski hill. These families have become a huge reason why I love this sport so much and the reason we spend so much time at the ski hill in the winter. My absolutely favourite thing about freestyle is the fact that we may not even know who we are cheering for or what club they are from as they come down the hill but we cheer just as loud and equally as enthusiastic. Our parents concentrate on what matters and the question I hear them asking their kids time and time again is, "Did you have fun?"
Seeing the children with a group of friends enjoying the outdoors is what Freestyle is for many and I believe that as they grow and their interests change, we will have shared our passion with them and been able to give them one of the greatest gifts ever, the love of skiing for life.
Wade.....I'm not sure how to thank you! This Club would not be what it is today if it weren't for your long hours of dedication and your active role. This year of all years I asked you to go above and beyond (almost weekly, sometimes daily) and you continuely showed up with a smile on your face and ready to go. All of us on the Board of Directors want to thank you for everything you do.
Coaches....This past season we were so lucky to have a full line up of amazing coaches. I want to thank each and every one of them for their time and dedication to our kids. Watching the groups at the start of the winter and seeing their progress towards the end of the season was incredible.
As for all of you volunteers...and you know who you are....you made the difference. Our courses looked amazing, your chopping rocked, building jumps got easier, getting the air bag blown up and then down again was a piece of cake, the prizes that were collected for the kids was over the top, manning the registration desks at competitions no matter what the situation - you made it look easy, the list goes on and on.
As for my sidekick Karen Dew - Treasurer extroidinaire and woman with many answers to my random questions - you kept me sane when I had no idea what I was doing, you kicked my butt when I needed to do something and didn't even know it, you were always there for me and I thank you for that!
AND what about those sponsors? It takes a community to raise our Club and we are off to get heights because of this community. We are lucky enough to have a full roster of hands on sponsors who are always looking to help our Club out. This coming year we will be looking to promote sponsors with our Air Bag and will have more room for additional sponsors in our Club Programs. So if you know of any company that may be interested in sponsoring us please send them to me or give me their information.
I hope everyone has a great summer in the sunshine and I look forward to seeing all our families out at the Beach in May.
Cheers,
Nicole :)

Wade Garrod - Program Director Update
We had a great season at Silver Star Freestyle Club. It takes an enormous amount of people and resources to run and support a successful club. We have so many great corporate partners, we have a great mountain to ski. We have amazing volunteers, coaches and a passion for skiing. Sometimes I try to quantify the return on investment and what I have come up with and what excites me the most is to hear that kids are excited to come every weekend and get up early to go skiing! That we as a ski club are able to draw more kids in through word of mouth because every weekend our children are going away stoked to come back. To see kids out in the trees, the bumps, the jumps, the park and even the groomers learning how to ski all the while having fun with each other, making new friends and developing lasting memories. Together as a club we have continued to develop a successful legacy of freestyle skiing and passion for the sport.
March was competition month and it was great to see so many positives, from grass roots events all the way up to provincial and national level events. As the winter season wrapped up I look forward more than ever to another winter. But in the meantime it is time to enjoy the air, dirt and water! Through late spring, summer and into next fall look for opportunities to bounce on trampolines, participate in water ramp camps and join SS Freestyle Group Mountain bike rides. We live in an amazing place so head into the outdoors and enjoy!

Keep it on your radar
We will be looking for help up at Silver Star this spring....when the mud dries up. We need to roll out the air bag, inflate it, do some repairs, dry it out, roll it back up and move it over to its summer home. Please stay tuned...we'll make it a fun day! The more hands the better.
FUNTASTIC GRANT Money $6000!!!!!!!
THANK YOU WADE for all your hard work in preparing the grant application to Funtastic. I was thrilled to join Wade at the presentation where we sat with our jaws wide open when we learned the Silver Star Freestyle was granted the most money any organization has ever received, far exceeding the other grants. Wade worked through March preparing our 3 stage plan for a Trampoline Facility. Our grant application was specifically for the purchase of new equipment (trampolines, deck ends, mats & springs). Our next step is securing land and eventually building a seasonal training facility that can be used by all North Okanagan youth. I can't tell you how excited I am to see this freestyle dream come alive and look forward to the next stages - WADE YOU'RE AWESOME! PARENTS...please do not hesitate if you run into any FUNTASTIC committee members to let them know how appreciative we are for becoming a recipient in their Community Grant Program. Please volunteer at Funtastic if you are around - they are looking for lots of help in running their weekend ball tournament.
March Madness - What a FUN month that was!

Thank you to all our Volunteers!
We couldn't have pulled off our year without all of you. I sincerely from the bottom of heart want to thank all of those returning volly veterans and the tons of awesome newcomers to the volunteer scene for showing up right when we needed you. We had so many new faces from the Jumps and Bumps parents it was amazing and a huge relief to see there will be lots of volunteers trained and ready to go for 2017. Our club is run almost 100% on volunteers who give some of their "ski time & beyond" up to create a truly special environment for our kids!

BEST Coaching Prank - April Fool's Day 2016
Head Coach Graham Pollock reported back to his slopestyle team after a coaches meeting at Timber Tour Mt Washington, that it was imperative for them to all compete in the moguls competition on April 1. He told them that they would not qualify for a Canada West Ski Area Pass if they did not compete. Now if you know these boys....every single one of them live, sleep and dream about the park....they love slopestyle, and spend very little time in moguls (if any). It was awesome.... every one of them showed up to training and KILLED it on the course. In fact, if Graham hadn't actually told them about his prank....they probably would have ended up on the podium. But he let them off the hook after they skied through training all morning! Thanks Graham for your humour and always keeping our kids on their toes.

Freeski - How did we do? Competiton Final Results
This was Silver Star Freestyle's first year entering a team into the Freeski world of competitions. We are so proud of their accomplishments and great attitudes. It was at times challenging to find big mountain terrain at Silver Star but they used what they had. Between Attridge, the back side and the terrain park they were able to ski and train all aspects of freeski disciplines.
Freesking is one of the fastest growing disciplines of skiing in the freestyle world and if your kids are interested in it they can inquire through our club and join the team once they are in Grade 8.

Following double gold medals at the Canada Winter Games last season 14 year old VSS grade 9 student Elena Gaskell had her sights set high. Starting the competition in Whistler at the Canadian Open Tour Elena was able to display some new tricks she had worked on over the summer linking together a cork 720 to misty 720 in her run securing her the first win of the season. From Whistler Elena travelled to Calgary Olympic Park for her first time competing at a Nor-Am event. Not daunted by the increased competition including an Olympian from the Sochi games, Elena focussed on clean execution and big amplitude. This proved to be the key to success in Calgary landing her on top of the
podium followed in second by BC teammate Dillan Glennie. From Calgary Elena earned two second place finishes in Ontario and then Quebec. From Quebec the Team travelled to Seven Springs, PA for the Nor-Am finals. After suffering a minor injury in training Elena wasn't able to compete at her full potential placing 7th. This result combined with the her first and second place finishes earlier in the season secured Elena the overall Nor-Am Cup Championship for the 2016 season. Elena's performances on the Canadian Open Tour also secured her second straight Canada Cup champions title. Supporting Elena are Silver Star Mountain Resort, K2 Skies, O'Neill Apparel, Smith Optics, Full Tilt
Boots and Sun Valley Source for Sports.

Hayden - Moguls
Hayden Person, former Silver Star Freestyle athlete and now a BC Mogul Team member has completed a successful first season with the team. He competed in his first NorAm competitions in Calgary and Park City and was one of the youngest competitors. Placing middle of the pack in Calgary and yielding a lower result in Park City, Hayden was very happy with his achievements. The other events he attended were Canada Cups at Le Massif and Canadian Selections at Apex, Senior Nationals at Camp Fortune and Jr Nationals in Beaver Valley.
Hayden's hard work this past season has put him number two in BC, third at Jr Nationals U16 and 21st place in Canada Cup Standings. He is getting ready to head out for training next month in Whistler for the summer in preparation for next season. Without the coaching and support over the years from the Silver Star Freestyle Club he wouldn't be where he is today. Thank you!

Jamie Rykuiter, a former Silver Star Freestyle athlete, is happy to call her first year with the BC Mogul Development Team a success. Jamie finished third overall in BC and 12th overall in Canada with her best result placing 5th at the Canadian Series at Apex Mountain. Jamie is pleased with the other results she achieved at Canadian Selections, the Timber Tours and Junior Nationals but her most memorable event this season was skiing against National Team member Audrey Robichaud on Duals Day at Senior Nationals in Quebec. Jamie is excited for the off season and getting back to basics in Whistler this May. She would like to thank the athletes, coaches, and parents also known as “Jamie’s Silver Star family” for making skiing fun and being supportive of her journey through the mogul world.
