“Our students win, when we work as one!”
- Mrs. Virginia Freeman - Principal
- Mr. David Sanford - Assistant Principal
Hello Panther Families!
By now I have met many of you but wanted to take a minute to introduce myself to the families I have not had the pleasure to meet in person.
My name is Virginia Freeman and I am the proud new principal of Forest Lake Elementary. I am so grateful to have been welcomed into the Panther family with open arms. I am honored to have the privilege to work with your students.
This is my 22nd year in elementary education and 14th year in Volusia County. I am a proud resident of Deltona and being appointed to serve my home community has been a dream come true. I look forward to many years together learning and growing.
On another note, I hope all families are aware of our new bell schedules. Students are welcome to arrive on campus as early as 7:20 and breakfast is free for all students. We are encouraging families to come earlier to avoid the 7:45 traffic jams. Students who arrive after the 7:50 bell will be marked late. Students are picked up by their teacher at 7:45 and begin instruction immediately at 7:50. Every minute counts and we need your help to ensure students arrive on time and don’t miss out!
Thanks for all you do!

KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten is rocking! We had a great time using our five senses at the Pumpkin Patch. Thank you to our volunteers who helped us out. We had a blast celebrating the 50th day of school doing fun activities and drinking root beer floats. Parents, please continue to work with your child to help them learn their alphabet letters and high frequency words. Check folders each day for important papers. Be sure to have your child to school on time every day. We are trying to earn lunch with the principal by having perfect attendance.
We appreciate your support.

FIRST GRADE
Happy Fall! Thank you families for a very successful start to the first grade year! In the month of October and moving into November, first grade will be busy learning in all subjects. Topics in math such as adding three numbers together by making 10, addition word problems, and graphing. Language arts will continue focusing on sight words, blending sounds, and main idea and details. Each week the homework is carefully created to cover what is being learned that week so please make sure you are completing the homework each night with your child for additional practice, it will only benefit them :-)
FOURTH GRADE
Last week, we introduced our annual Social Studies Fair project. Students should know their topic by now, and should begin research as soon as possible. The majority of this project should be completed at home. Students brought home a packet explaining the rules of the fair, as well as a list of due dates for each part of the project. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
We are working with multiplication and division concepts in math. It is extremely important that students be able to fluently recall the basic multiplication facts. This will allow them to focus on the strategies, procedures, and concepts involved in multiplying and dividing large numbers.
FIFTH GRADE
Hello Families! Thank you for such an amazing start to fifth grade this year. We can tell our fifth graders are hard at work. Please don’t forget the following dates: October 31st which is Pumpkinology and November 4th which is the Young Peoples Concert. Students will need a brown bag lunch. We are looking forward to an amazing second quarter with topics like theme, multiplication and division, and the water cycle! Please encourage your students to tell you what they are learning about and ask them about their homework.
SPECIAL AREA NEWS
PE
We are starting our mile run training during PE class. Students will be running big laps at PE to help build their endurance for the mile run, which will be the week of December 9-13.
Coach Boyle is finishing up volleyball and then moving into football. Students will be learning how to use flag football flags, throwing the football and catching the football. The first week of December grades 2-5 will be tested on their football catching and throwing skills.
Coach Albano is starting with her soccer unit. She will be teaching the students how to properly kick the soccer ball and how to play the game of soccer. She will also be doing the mileage club for toe tokens with her class sometime before the mile run.
To further prepare for the mile run both classes will be running the cross country course during the week of November 12-15.
ART
The art room has been busy this last 9 weeks creating art based off Wayne Thiebaud. Our artists are preparing for the Volusia county fair, we are preparing for our booth making various works of art inspired by Mr. Thiebaud. Festival season is among us for art, so we will be learning about more artists and working on more art!!!! Get ready to see Forest Lakes hard work soon in the front office.

MUSIC
.5th Grade students will be attending the Young People’s Concert on Monday, November 4th. Students should have received their permission form from their homeroom teachers and will need to have it signed and returned by Thursday, October 31st. This concert gives all 5th grade students in Volusia County the opportunity to see live music and dance. The concert will feature the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra with appearances by the Orlando Opera and the Orlando Ballet.
Both music clubs started rehearsals at the beginning of October. Chorus meets on Tuesdays after school and Orff and Recorder Ensemble meets Thursdays after school. We will have our Winter Concert in the cafeteria on Thursday, December 12th at 6:00 PM. All families and friends are invited to attend the concert.
During the first quarter, the focus for Pre-K through second grade was beat and rhythm. Third through fifth grade focused on pitch. Pre-K learned about fast and slow sounds and music, Kindergarten worked on finding and moving to the steady beat. First and second grade practiced hearing and performing different meters in music. Third grade worked on melodic direction and singing. Fourth and Fifth grade learned about scales and intervals. Each month we will discuss a different composer and listen to their music and talk about their lives. In September we learned about Beethoven and during October we have been listening to the music of J.S Bach.
MEDIA CENTER NEWS
Reading is such an important lifelong skill, yet it is it often neglected because of our busy schedules. Here is a list of some easy ways to support your child's reading:
- Read Every Day Make reading to and with your child a part of every day. Take turns reading newspaper articles, or favorite paragraphs from whatever you happen to be reading. Talk about the writing style, perspective used, and any unfamiliar words.
- Ask Questions About Reading Find out what book your child is reading right now and talk about it. Is it as good as the last one? Is the main character sympathetic or not? Can your child predict what will happen next in the book? What book will be next?
- Set up a Reading Area Creating a cozy home reading corner is a great way to encourage your child to read. If you’ve got room for two chairs, spend some quiet time reading together, too.
- Define Unfamiliar Words Be prepared to help your child discover new words while reading. It’s a good idea to keep a dictionary handy, just in case you’re both stumped!
- Write Notes Use a family bulletin board to leave written messages to family members every day. Encourage your child to write messages for the board, too.
- Offer Reading Rewards Give your child special attention or a specific reward, such as a book, every time your child finishes five or ten books. Encourage them to participate in the Reading Counts Program.
- Share Stories Encourage your child to read stories to siblings or other children.
- Daily Word Open the dictionary once a day at a random spot to come up with a Word of the Day. See who can use the word in a sentence more times during the day.
- Library Visits Make weekly library visits a part of your family routine. Getting to know your public librarian is a great way to find out about new books.
- Give the Gift of Reading. Magazines and books make great gifts for birthdays and holidays.
- Parent/Child Book Club Get together with your child and other parents and children (in the same age range as your child) to form a book club in which parents and children read and discuss the same books.
- Turn Off the TV! Give family reading time priority over family viewing time.
Parents are encouraged to visit our FLE media center. We are open to parents before and after school. Parents may check out up to three books at a time and keep them for a week. Please stop by and visit us. We look forward to seeing you.
FLORIDA KID CARE
GUIDANCE NEWS
October was National Bullying Prevention Month. Classes had lessons on how to prevent bullying in our school. October 22-26 was Red Ribbon Week. During the week we had different events each day to help promote a Drug Free School. It is important that we remind our students that staying healthy means staying drug free. We want our students to learn to say “Yes” to a healthy lifestyle and “No” to drugs. Together we can be United Against Bullies and Drugs!!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
