Changing the Question - "How Was School Today?"
As parents, we have all fallen into a common trap. Our child comes home from a busy day at school and we ask, "How was school today?" Then we receive the dreaded answer - "Good." Often, that is the end of the conversation. That should be the start of the conversation, not the end! Your child spends approximately 7 hours a day at Neidig, and the answer of "Good" does not provide nearly enough detail to understand the amount of work your child accomplishes at school. Below, you will find resources to help improve that conversation.
At Neidig, your child learns a great deal each day. To focus the conversation on learning, QCSD's Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) developed THIS PARENT RESOURCE so you know what your child is studying and learning. This resource provides detailed information about the math and reading content your child learned during the first trimester, and what he or she is currently learning in the second trimester. (Scroll down for trimester 2 information.) With this information, you can know exactly what your child's teacher is discussing. For example, using the link above, parents of second graders can see that in module 4 of Eureka students are 'decomposing' numbers when adding and subtracting. Since many of us did not learn to add and subtract this way, a good question to your child could be - "Since I did not learn to add numbers this way, can you show me how you decompose numbers when you add 125 + 75?" This specific question will force your child to show you what he or she is working on, and possibly lead to further conversation.
Additionally, I found THIS ARTICLE about asking your child good questions. The author shares the importance of asking questions about feelings and emotions, and not only academic content. Please take some time to look through it. I hope you find it as helpful as I did.

Neidig's Mission Statement
Recently, Mr. Godshalk sent an email to all families asking for your help revising our mission statement. Thank you to those of you who have provided input. If you did not, please read below.
Here is the premise – Your child spends a great deal of time here at Neidig, and will leave this school and move on to middle school with new knowledge and new skills. We want to know what knowledge and skills you value the most. Think about the knowledge and skills that are most important to you, and use that information to complete this statement…
When my child leaves Neidig, it is my hope and expectation that he or she will …

Teacher Conferences
Leaders of the Month!
Each month, the Neidig teaching team selects 7 students as our Leaders of the Month. One student is selected for each grade level, and the specialists also select one student. These students demonstrate leadership qualities, and fulfill the intentions of the the Neidig Promise every day. It is an honor to highlight some of the many leaders at Neidig with this recognition. Congratulations to this month's winners, pictured below!
Julian, Anna, Connor, Evan, Gabe, Hasan, and Sara!
