School is winding down but the fun is still flowing. This week we will be getting down and dirty while bugging out! This week's theme is bugs and dirt. We will work on portfolio work this week in Art, practicing our hands at cutting, folding, & drawing.
We will also be able to create our own 3D bugs with play dough and accessories. Our Discovery station will host bug discovery games while we play in the dirt at our Sensory tables.
Our Teachers of the Week, for the letter ‘Zz’, this week are Felix & Atticus in Marisa’s room and Remy & Gavin in Danielle’s room.
Here’s to a bright, sunny, & fun week ahead!

Dear Parents,
Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day. First of all, thank you for all of the continued support throughout the school year. I have enjoyed being a part of the NMS community. The K/1 class has been my home base and I absolutely adore everyone. It is a privilege to help each of the children grow individually and as a whole!
Ocean Book Writing: The Ocean book has been completed and is in transit to the publisher! The book will be delivered to each of you, in time for Summer vacation. If you have not turned in an order form, please do so ASAP. It is an accumulation of hard work and creativity. It is impressive!
Ocean celebration: We plan on celebrating our accumulation of research and knowledge about the oceans. It will be Wednesday May 24, 2023. Everyone is welcome to join us for a slide show and presentation of our works. We plan on starting at 8:45am. Further details will be sent out later this week.
Math: We plan on continuing our math lessons with a focus on time. We will discuss how time effects our daily schedule, different representatives of time(ex. analog clock), and how to interpret the different representations of time.
SEL: We will continue to discuss care and kindness towards ourselves and others. The children have been working individually and as a community. There has been quite a few moments where I have caught someone sharing a kind word, extending a helping hand, or showing support. It is definitely having a positive affect!
As most of you know, we are planning a field trip to the Toledo Zoo with the Elementary Class on June 6th. Please make sure the permission slip and $12 fee is turned in. If this has already been done, thank you!
Enjoy the week!
Best,
Ms. Shelley

Thank you for making us feel special during Teacher Appreciation week!
Oregon Trail
We are working on preparations for our “trip” next week. This week the families will “purchase” their supplies and build their wagons. We have enough drivers for our journey, thanks to all the volunteers! They will be “purchasing” supplies for the trip this week, including building their covered wagons. The older students have explored weaving to create their own cloth. They seem to enjoy the process and think about how it would have been to be a pioneer.
Zoo
We are still looking for volunteers for drivers for our trip to the Toledo Zoo. If you haven’t sent in the permission slip or the $12 per child, please do so.
Looking Ahead at Conferences!
If you would like to have an End-of-the-Year conference, please let one of the teachers know so we can make arrangements.. We usually plan on meeting at 7:30am and 8:00am prior to school the week of June 1 and June 5th.
Reading Groups
Each group has finished their novel studies. They did a fantastic job reading and comprehending. Their novel study packets will be coming home along with the quiz they took about their book. The group discussions about the books are always my favorite part. This week and next week we will be working on figurative language and homophones. We will talk about and identify similes, metaphors, and idioms. We will also talk about how these are used in books we read. I have some fun games that we will be playing to master these skills.
Writing Groups
In group we have begun working on mapping out story lines. We have been using tools like story cubes, cards, pictures, and prompts to kickstart the brainstorming process. It’s so fun seeing what ideas they come up with! We will be working on writing our stories during the next few weeks. For journal writing, we wrote about the Oregon Trail (why is our “family” taking the trip and what are we hoping for at the end of the journey). We also came up with lists of suggestions for future journal prompts. Some were very original, such as, “If you could eat a planet, what would it be made out of?” and “If you found a genie in the bottle what would your 3 wishes be?”
Math Groups
The math groups have done a exceptionally good job at measuring items, circumference and angles last week. The Fortnight Kittens measured their thumbs, hands and forearms in inches and centimeters. The Pug Puppies determined what the diameter was in a variety of cylinders then figured out the circumference. The Bagels worked on measuring angles and created tangram works and measured each angle. The Floppa Blades/Cactus Clan classified triangles, determined the reflex angles and solved for the unknown angles with multiply steps.
This week:
The Fortnite Kittens will build on those skills to create 3-D shapes.
The Pug Puppies will learn about right angles and comparing other angles to it.
The Bagels work with the radius to determine the circumference and determine the degrees of an angle in new ways.
The Floppa Blades / Cactus Clan will be exploring how the angles of triangles have something in common. We will end the week with fractals.
Middle School Leaders (Grades 6-8)
Teachers:
Linda Hyde linda@newmorningschool.com
Nicole Matoian nicolem@newmorningschool.com
Hello Middle School parents! We hope you all enjoyed a nice Mother's Day weekend.
We have a busy week ahead of us.
This week in Language Arts, all groups will be reading and studying their science fiction stories, "There Will Come Soft Rains" (Group A) and "Flowers for Algernon" (groups B and C). Students will answer comprehension questions, study vocabulary, examine figurative language, and write about the themes of the stories.
In Social Studies, students will study the famous slave narrative The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, written in first person by the famous abolitionist and which provides firsthand testimony of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
In Math, Group A will use positive and negative numbers to describe temperature and elevation. Students will interpret points on the number line that represent positive and negative numbers, and understand that opposite numbers are the same distance from zero, but on different sides of the number line.
Group B will explore relationships of angles and use the terms complementary and supplementary to describe pairs of angels. Students will find unknown angle measures by reasoning about angles relationships. Students will also identify vertical angles as a pair of angles created by two intersecting lines.
Group C will identify and give examples of irrational numbers. Students will find a decimal approximation for square roots and plot square roots on the number line. Students will also use their knowledge of numbers which are perfect squares to identify two whole numbers between which a square root lies and explain the reasoning.
Important Dates to Remember:
Monday, May 22: 8th Grade Vision Boards due for review
Thursday, June 1: 8th Grade Presentation of Museum, Portfolios, and Career Exploration
Wednesday, June 7: End of Year Performance, 8th Gr. Graduation, & 8th Gr. Retrospective
Finally, please let us know if you would like to schedule a year-end Conference for your child. We are available either before or after school during the days of June 1, 2, 5, 6, or 7. The mornings of June 1st and 5th have already been scheduled.
Enjoy your week!
Ms. Linda and Ms. Nicole
