This Sunday's Message: Look Again
This Sunday's Scriptures: Psalm 147:1-11, Mark 1:29-39
From the desk of Pastor Paul...
Dear Friends,
This Sunday we will welcome the Rev. Ken Kaibel to our services as our preacher. Ken just completed serving as Interim Pastor at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in Detroit. He has previous experience as a pastor, associate pastor, as well as service as both an Army and hospital chaplain, including year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan. I look forward to welcoming Ken to our worship this Sunday.
Looking ahead a bit into February, on Tuesday February 27th at 7 p.m., we will host Lisa Berkey, Executive Director of the Greater West Bloomfield Coalition, whose group vision is that “our community will be safe, healthy, and free from substance abuse.” She will speak about the pending ballot initiative on recreational marijuana which is expected to appear on Michigan ballots in the fall. Among other things, this ballot initiative as currently written would allow the highest per person possession limit of any state in the nation, allow transfer of 2.5 ounces to someone else, and not allow local municipalities to prohibit sales unless they have a special election to “opt out”.
This is a significant and important topic in relationship to the health and well-being of our communities and our state. Please plan to come and hear Lisa’s presentation on the 27th, and invite other friends and neighbors to join you as well.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Paul
Walk to Galilee This Lent
How do you travel through Lent? Would you be interested in taking a group “journey” to Galilee with your OLCC, P family? This Lenten journey is two-fold—spiritual and physical. The goal is to log the equivalent number of miles from Orchard Lake, Michigan to Galilee by exercising (walking, running, biking, vacuuming, dancing, singing, playing a sport—use your imagination) and turning your mileage in to the Walk to Galilee box in the Lakeview Area.
Beginning February 14, we will be adding up the miles weekly and tracking our progress hoping to arrive in Galilee by Easter. Exercise is not the only component of the Walk to Galilee—prayer is vital. Pick up a Lenten Devotional "Psalms for Lent" found on the Welcome Desk and in the Narthex to supplement your exercise travel. Twenty minutes of exercise and/or prayer equals one mile. This journey is for the young and young at heart so travel with your family and friends as we Walk to Galilee!
New Class Begins February 15: Sinning Like A Christian
Pastor Thwaite’s Lenten sermon series will be based on a book by William Willimon entitled, “Sinning Like A Christian: A New Look at the 7 Deadly Sins.” In parallel, the sermon and book will be discussed weekly in the Christian Life & Learning adult education classes beginning February 15, ending March 22. Pastor Thwaite will also be participating in the classes. Sign up for the class and/or purchase the book in the Lakeview Area. (You can also order your own book online).
