The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - December 5, 2021
A Note from Principal Welch
Welcome to December! It was wonderful to see our students back at school this past week after the extended holiday weekend. I hope you enjoyed time with loved ones and made memories that for many of us, have been almost 2 years in the making. For our families who are currently celebrating Hanukkah, I wish you a blessed holiday.
I want to bring special attention to a challenge we have started to see surface at school, in several classrooms, and grade levels. As students (and adults) learn how to come back together in shared spaces and problem solve situations, we are finding that we are needing to spend time teaching/reaching and reinforcing kind language to be used with others. In the past several weeks, we have seen an increase in students using unkind, mean, and inappropriate language towards other students. I am asking for your partnership at home as we continue to support students using language that uplifts others at school. Calling other students names, using swear words, or purposefully hurting others will not be tolerated.
While we do not all have to agree with each other, I do expect all students (and adults) to be respectful of each other. Teaching others how to respectfully disagree and work collaboratively in shared spaces (classrooms, specialists, recess, and in the community and world) is an essential aspect I want to focus on. Our school is enriched by our differences and everyone is welcome at Cottage Lake!
In this newsletter, you will find a lot of information below regarding holiday supports, our book fair that runs this coming M-W, upcoming spirit days at school, and more.
Thank you for sharing your student(s) with us!
I wish you all a great week ahead.
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

Book Fair: "Bundle Up for Books"
For: Kids & Families
Dates: December 6-9
Times: After School-
Monday & Tuesday 4:15-7
Wednesday 2:40-7 (open during the Paint & Pottery party)
Place: Outside the library under the overhang, unless it is raining sideways ☔, and we must retreat into the library
Students will have a "Wish List" day on Friday and bring home some ideas that inspire them. This is a "case only" fair with fewer fluffy items (mostly books!!)
We will only be selling what comes in the cases "while supplies last" as I cannot guarantee that any re-orders will come in a timely fashion. (classroom book orders have been delayed this year, as you know). There will be an "Online" fair component, but delivery time is not guaranteed.
Book Fair Donations
People have been asking how they can help with the Book Fair so that more books can get into more kids' hands. We have set up an eWallet to which you can donate.
* If you would like to attend the book fair, but purchasing a book would add a financial strain on your family, please know we are here to help in providing books for students. Please reach out to Ms. Welch, Mrs. McKinnon, or Mrs. Sterling if we can assist you in providing a book for your student.
Giving Tree Up in the Office
Thank you!

School Board approves three funding measures
During the Oct. 11 meeting, the Northshore School Board voted to place three funding measures on the February 8, 2022 ballot.
These three measures continue our work to build better together: modernizing schools, sustaining technology, and increasing opportunities.
- The Educational Programs and Operations Levy (EP&O) and the Technology Levy are not new taxes, but renewals of funding measures that are set to expire this year. These two levies would continue to provide funding for critical staffing and programming that support all Northshore students.
- The Capital Projects Bond would replace an expiring bond and help us address our highest facility needs.
This fall and winter, we will be sharing more information about the proposed projects and how they support our students and District.

If you are printing out the menu at the beginning of the month, there will inevitably be changes before the month is over.
