Summer Break is Here!
Final 18-19 Newsletter - Senior Edition
Now that we have said so long to the Class of 2019 and all other students have finished their year, we are already planning for a fantastic 2019-2020. Summer school is in full swing, report cards will be mailed this week, STAAR EOC results will be emailed out soon, summer camps are welcoming current and future Lobos, and registration for Summer School is underway.
Summer is a time to rest, relax, and recharge for students and staff but learning does not have to stop. Summer is a great time to learn a new skill or practice one that needs improvement. Take a class on something fun like dance, playing an instrument, painting, swimming, or skiing. There are summer camps galore that will teach anything from cooking to writing code. Summer is also a great time to read for pleasure. Research shows that the more we read the more we learn and the larger vocabulary we have. Reading is an excellent way to unplug from technology so set a goal and come up with a reward for when the goal is accomplished. There are ways to get a jump start on next school year. If your high school student will be a Junior now is the time to prepare to take the SAT or ACT. There are free resources like Khan Academy as well as prep courses that will individualize your students study plan.
With summer in full swing, it is time for families to plan vacations, students to find summer jobs, and teachers to work on their craft in summer professional development offerings. While traditional visions of summer activities have more to do with pools, beaches, movies, and travel, many students and teachers use the summer time to get a jump start on their next year of school. Some students sign up for summer school to retake a class, prepare for an EOC, or work on skills needed for college entrance exams such as SAT and ACT. While teachers take classes in technology applications, teaching strategies, or expanding their content knowledge.

Teenagers who are anxious or depressed often turn to pot or alcohol to make themselves feel better. It's easy to get, their friends are doing it, and there’s no stigma attached. It may actually help with their symptoms in the short term. But substance use can also delay and undermine their ability to get effective, lasting help and put them on a collision course with addiction.
This week on childmind.org we feature a comprehensive guide to substance use and mental health disorders, developed in collaboration with the Partnership for Drug Free Kids. In it we examine how substance use interacts specifically with disorders in adolescents and young adults — how does it affect symptoms, behavior, treatment, and long-term prognosis? The guide is for both parents and teenagers themselves, it’s downloadable, and we hope it will enable families to make decisions that will be effective for them, now and in the future.

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
