Principal's Message

Dear Hiawatha Community,

There was absolute joy felt through our building last night as parents, children, and caregivers came to our Open House! I hope you enjoyed your time connecting as a community. You can view my presentation below:

Open House

What a rainy week we have had! If it is pouring rain in the morning during the 7:35-7:45 drop off, the outside gym door will be open so children can come into our gym with Mrs. Corbin and Mrs. Miller. On non-rainy days, any arriving students should enter through their classroom doors. After 7:45, they should go to the front office door so Ms. Michelle can sign them in.

Enjoy your weekend,

Help the EWSD Shape the Direction of Our Educational System!

Dear EWSD Community,

The Essex Westford School District is leading the way in making 21st-century learning a reality for all students. We are seeking diverse perspectives from our students, families, staff, and the broader community in developing a Portrait of a Graduate. This will serve as a framework for helping us achieve our EWSD vision - Growing hearts and minds, for a better today and tomorrow, every day, every way, every one.

Now more than ever, our students must be provided high-level learning opportunities that foster critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st-century skills and mindsets. Our shared aspiration is that all our students have an educational experience that prepares them to be lifelong learners and contributors today and tomorrow.

We want our Portrait of a Graduate to be locally developed and globally positioned. I hope you will bring your voice and unique perspective to this collaborative process.

Over the next few months, the Portrait Design Team will explore the following questions:

  • What are our community's hopes, dreams, and aspirations for our students?

  • What skills and mindsets do our students need for success in this rapidly changing and complex world?

  • What are the learning experiences we want our students to experience?

Save these dates!

Our Portrait Design Team will meet in person four times to design the Portrait of a Graduate, and each meeting builds upon the other:

  • Meeting 1: October 19 (6:00 PM - 8:30 PM) in the Essex High School Cafeteria

  • Meeting 2: November 9 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM) in the Essex High School Cafeteria

  • Meeting 3: December 14 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM) in the Essex High School Cafeteria

  • Meeting 4: January 11, 2023 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM) virtual

Here are a few resources you may wish to review in preparation for our time together:

  • (sample portraits): See how school systems across the country have engaged their larger community in developing a shared framework for students

Message from Mr. B in the Gym

Hello Families,

It's great to be back and watch kids smiling and running around the gym! All Hiawatha students have been practicing how use cooperation skills to accomplish many tasks in partners, small groups and whole class activities. During health class, students have learned how to be safe and make good decisions at home, at school and in their community.

Message from Ms. Weston

Greetings Hiawatha Families,

Your children are settling in well at school. It’s wonderful to see children coming together as a community. This week we learned about our 3rd schoolwide expectation; Be Your Best. We learned that being your best includes recognizing problems, making and learning from mistakes, asking for help, and sticking with things that are hard. The students learned about the word persistence: not giving up on something that you think is hard. Check out this video of a young rock climber who we learned about.

Have a good weekend, and be in touch if you’d like to know more about social emotional learning at Hiawatha.

Take care,
