Karthik Arumugam Receives 1st Place in Region 1 Science Fair
Recently, Karthik Arumugam participated in SC Region 1 Science Fair at Southern Wesleyan University and received 1st place in the category of Junior Math and Technology. In recognition of his outstanding performance, Karthik is now nominated to compete in 2022 Broadcom Masters. He also received a $500 scholarship to Southern Wesleyan University.
His project titled "Radiation: How can We Live with It?" seeks to measure electromagnetic radiation emitted from different devices, determining how it varies when placed at various distances, testing the different ways to block this radiation, and identifying the best options to protect ourselves from being exposed to the radiation.
Middle School Students Shine at MathCounts State Competitions
It was a very exciting weekend for our school’s MathCounts team! All six of our state finalists participated in the lightening round competition (top 16) and were a part of top 14 in the state.
As a result of their collective and individual efforts, Sterling School received 1st place team round! The six team members (pictured left to right) include Nicholas Hu, Samuel Gospodarek, Grace Qin, Brandon Xu, Jeffrey Bao, and Eric Shi.
Brandon Xu received 1st in individual, Eric Shi placed 2nd in count down and received 3rd in individual, Nicholas Hu placed 3rd in count down! Brandon and Eric now advance to nationals. Congratulations, everyone! #WholeChild #ReImagine
Students Recognized in Recent Art Show

We also had an Elementary District Art Show Honorable Mention for Sterling Metcalf, a fourth grade student, for his Printmaking and Mixed Media Koinobori Fish Kite (above right). Great job, Sterling! #ReImagine #WholeChild
March Faculty & Staff of the Month
Here are some comments our faculty/staff had for this month's selection:
- Mrs. Augustin: She is a smart, creative teacher and an incredibly generous colleague. Her commitment and determination are unmatched. She finds a way to balance focused academic achievement, clear accountability for students, and deep understanding of her students' needs.
- Ms. Mendes: She is always positive, enthusiastic, and has the patience of a saint! She is an expert in her field and works so hard to ensure her students are loved and safe. She comes to school everyday with a full heart and gives her students consistency and the best instruction possible. She is perfect for this nomination.
- Mr. Cook: He's the glue that holds our school together. He does so much and has established some great relationships with the kids. He truly takes pride in his work and works with a great attitude. He shows respect to and cares well for his team members. He also engages the students and other staff with kindness and is ready to help whenever possible!
These individuals are truly wonderful examples of what it means to embody our school's #WholeChild mission! Thank you, Melody, Tara, and Todd, for ALL you do!

Whether it’s the Caves of Lascaux in France where prehistoric Man portrayed images of Bulls and Horses, from Ancient Egyptian Cat statues, to The Renaissance with their royal dog breeds, and ultimately Modern Art that often portrays a more whimsical side of Animals, Artists have always been inspired by Animals. Animals in art are depicted in rural life and agriculture, to myths and legends, and are portrayed in many different ways. Art can help us express and explore our relationship to wildlife and can help us think about how we care for animals and the environment.
