Words Cannot Express My Gratitude...Thank You to Discovery Students, Families, Staff and to Fargo Public Schools for this Honor.
Thank You Students and Staff
Thank You To My Family
Thank You to My Friends, Mentors, and Colleagues
Memo From Mrs. Herrick
Firstly, I would like to thank Fargo Public Schools for the honor of being named Administrator of the Year. It isn't often that your administrative team tricks you into thinking there is a situation in gym one during an evacuation drill. I barreled into the gym to find myself surrounded by our student body, mentors, friends, and family. I am not a huge fan of surprises, but am truly appreciative of this award. Discovery is a special place that I have called my other home for over 20 years. I have had the privilege of working with young people as a teacher, assistant principal, and now head principal in this building. I am consistently in awe of our students as well as the staff that work so hard to provide a space that is a place where our students can transition from elementary to high school in three short years. There is no place I would rather be than with these people and with these kids. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Step Outside: The Importance of Nature for Middle School Mental Wellness
In recent years, mental wellness has become an increasingly important topic, particularly regarding our children's mental health. As we all know, middle school can be particularly challenging for students as they navigate new social dynamics, increased academic demands, and physical changes. One effective way to promote positive mental wellness in middle school students is by encouraging them to spend time outdoors.
Studies have shown that spending time in nature can positively impact mental health. Being outside can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and boost cognitive function. For middle school students, who may be experiencing a range of emotions and stressors, spending time in nature can be particularly beneficial.
Spending time outdoors promotes mental wellness because it allows students to disconnect from technology and social media. Many middle school students spend a significant amount of time on their devices, contributing to stress and anxiety. By disconnecting from technology and spending time outside, students can clear their minds and focus on the present moment.
In addition, being outdoors provides students with opportunities for physical activity, which can positively impact mental wellness. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve self-esteem, and increase overall feelings of well-being. By engaging in physical activity outdoors, students can improve their physical health and boost their mental wellness.
Finally, spending time in nature can help students develop a sense of awe and appreciation for the world around them. Research has shown that experiencing awe can help reduce feelings of stress and increase overall well-being. By spending time in nature and experiencing the beauty of the natural world, students can cultivate a sense of awe and wonder that can have lasting benefits for their mental health.
In conclusion, getting outside is a simple yet effective way to promote positive mental wellness in middle school students. By encouraging your child to spend time in nature, you can help them reduce stress and anxiety, improve their mood and cognitive function, and cultivate a sense of awe and appreciation for the world around them. So, let's make sure that our middle school boys and girls get outside and enjoy the beauty of nature!
Restorative Practices News from Jennifer Tackling:
Reflection and Moving Forward
As the end of the school year draws near, take a few moments with your student to reflect on the school year. What went well? What were the struggles? Make your teen comfortable by having this conversation sitting side by side instead of face to face, walking and talking, or having some delicious food together. Ask questions that can’t be answered with a simple “yes” or “no” response. Have your teen make goals for the next school year and ask how you can help them achieve those goals. These goals can be academic (I want to be more organized), extracurricular (I want to practice basketball or my instrument 4 times a week), or life oriented (I want to go to sleep without my phone in my bedroom). As the adult in the conversation, help your teen create small practical steps to achieve their goal. Don’t forget the positive praise – it’s easy to focus on the mistakes your teen makes, but teens thrive on genuine positive feedback. Celebrate their success as they work toward their goals and let your teen know what goals you have and how you are working to achieve them. Modeling those strategies for your child is a wonderful way to show them that self-reflection, having a goal, and working toward it is important in life. Make a weekly casual check-in with them that gives you the connection you crave with your child and makes them feel secure and supported.

Mr. Ford's Focus - Winding Down the Year, the Eagles Expo, and a Special Congratulations
We have almost exactly one month left in the 2022-2023 school year. This time of year is always exciting. Many students and staff members both welcome the warm and sunny summer months and simultaneously miss the structure and relationships that happen every day at school. Our 6th graders have gained valuable middle-school experience this year. They’ve adjusted to the daily schedule and beats that happen throughout the day. Our 7th graders have grown considerably over the year and are now seasoned middle-school students. Now they begin they’re transition to being the oldest role models at Discovery next year. Our 8th grade students are finishing up they’re middle-school years as they look toward the next chapter in their lives – high school.
Much like the change our 8th graders are going through, the 5th grade students in Fargo Public Schools are shifting gears as well. They will be transitioning to middle school and many will be joining the Discovery Family next year. With that adjustment in mind, Discovery held our annual Eagle Expo on Tuesday, April 25th. Discovery welcomed 5th grade students from Bennett, Centennial, Ed Clapp, Eagles, and Kennedy. Mrs. Herrick presented the students and parents/guardians with information about the school and members of the staff. Families were given access to information and frequently asked questions. There was a photo booth set up with an opportunity to take pictures with our Discovery Eagle mascot. Discovery coaches set up a table to answer questions about the various activities available next year. The Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) had a table to inform incoming families about how they serve the school and how to become involved. There was also a scavenger hunt for the students to become more familiar with the building and areas/people they will be working with next year. It was a great night to meet and greet our next class of students and the first step toward getting them ready for middle school. There will also be Eagles Camp and Back to School Night before they officially begin next year.
Finally, I would also like to take a moment to say congratulations to Mrs. Herrick. Mrs. Herrick was named Administrator of the Year for Fargo Public Schools on April 21st. I have had the privilege of working for Mrs. Herrick since being hired in 2018. She has become someone I look up to and I admire her professionalism and dedication to both her students and staff. Like Dr. Gandhi said at the award presentation, ‘our students are better off because of who she is’. This award is well-deserved. Congratulations Mrs. Herrick.
NURSES’ CORNER: Drugs: did you know...
Young people are having an increasing problem with prescription drug abuse. The prescription drugs most often abused include opioid painkillers, sedatives, anti-anxiety medications and stimulants.
Prescription drug abuse is when someone takes a prescription drug that was prescribed for someone else or in a manner or dosage other than what was prescribed. Abuse can include taking a friend’s or relative’s prescription to get high, to help with studying, or even to treat pain.
Preventing prescription drug abuse with your teen can include taking the following steps as a parent:
Safeguard all drugs at home, by monitoring quantities and controlling access. A simple way to monitor would be to keep track of refills. Note if you have to get refills more often than expected, there could be a problem and someone could be using your medication.
Set clear rules for teens about all drug use, including not sharing medicine and always following the medical provider’s advice and dosages.
- Make sure your teen uses prescription drugs only as directed and follow instructions for OTC products carefully.
Make sure your child is not ordering drugs online.
Discuss the dangers of taking someone else’s medications.
- Remind them that using alcohol with medications can increase the risk of accidental overdose.
Properly conceal and dispose of old or unneeded medications in the trash.
- Keep the prescriptions in the original container since the caps are childproof. Alter the medication to discourage others from taking it. Add water to bottles of pills and tape the lid shut. With a liquid medication add some salt or flour to the bottle before taping shut.
- Do not flush the medication down your drains, as the filtration process may not filter out the ingredients found in many of the medications.
- Residents can dispose of medications at the front desk of the Fargo Police Department between the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Ask friends and family to safeguard their prescription drugs as well.
- Make sure they know the risks of potential abuse and to monitor their own medicine cabinets.

SRO Corner with Andrea Noll
This school year is flying by, and Spring (should) be right around the corner! Every day you drop off your child or pick them up you are reminded you are another day closer to summer break! Please remember when you are either dropping them off/picking them up to do it safely. The parking lot and surrounding streets get very chaotic during those times of the day. Over the past few months I have started to get complaints from parents and residences around the school due to inappropriate parking on streets and side streets. The City of Fargo Municipal code explains “Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specified places” (8-1003). The code reads “No person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the law or the directions of a police officer or traffic-control device, in any of the following places:” The following are some examples from the code:
C. In front of a public or private driveway, including parking so as to encroach on the radius of said driveway.
D. Within 10 feet of that portion of a curb which is directly in front of an adjacent fire hydrant.
E. On a crosswalk.
F. Within 10 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
L. Alongside or opposite any street excavation or obstruction when stopping, standing, or parking would obstruct traffic.
M. On the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street.
O. At any place where official signs prohibit stopping.
Please keep this in mind when dropping off or picking up your child from school. We always want it to be as safe as possible for everyone driving on the street. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

At our April meeting we had two teacher grant requests. The PTA is proud to support our teachers and funded a grant for classroom supplies as well as sponsoring the Bluestem Ball!
Our next meeting is May 15 at 6:30 p.m. Use door 31 to join us. This will also be the last meeting with our current executive board.
Concession Help is Needed
We don’t do walk-a-thons or carnivals, but we do have to have a fundraising source to keep making a difference for our students and teachers. Our main source of fundraising is running the concession stand during Discovery activities. We’ve got track meets coming up this spring that we’ll need students and adults to volunteer their time.
Please consider donating an hour or two of your time. It’s a great way for students to learn about working with money and customer service as well as supporting a great cause!
We’ve got two signup links currently posted on the Discovery Middle School PTA Facebook group. You’ll see more signups in the weeks to come.
Join the private group by scanning the QR code below or searching “Discovery Middle School PTA-Fargo”. You can also email DiscoveryPTAPresident@gmail.com if you are able to help on any of these dates.
Thank you for considering a shift or two!

ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING DURING SCHOOL HOURS
Fargo Public Schools is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all of our schools to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and staff. Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do so. The Raptor system will allow us to better screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools to provide us with a safe environment for our students and staff.
Upon entering the school building, visitors will be asked to present an ID, such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. If a parent or guardian for any reason does not have a US government-issued ID, the school staff member can use any form of identification and manually enter the person’s name into the Raptor system. Once entry into the building is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of their visit. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
A video overview of our pilot and how the system works is available at: https://youtu.be/8qwHwTmp-80
PARENT/FAMILY ACCOMODATIONS

Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Discovery Students in Need
What: Discovery strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Discovery, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Discovery, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Discovery to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Discovery counselor or administrator. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Taylor Ferderer (school counselor) at 446-3318.
Written Notification of School Accountability Report
Dear Parent/Guardian,
North Dakota has launched a dashboard called “Insights,” designed to help communities across the state access important information about K-12 districts and schools. Insights features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including:
- Student Achievement
- Choice Ready Results
- Performance Comparisons
- English Learner Progress
- Graduation Rates
- School and State Accountability Results
- School Improvement Information
- Post-Secondary Education
- School Environment
Transparency to the Public
North Dakota is committed to informing communities about how well our schools are doing. North Dakota’s future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate choice ready with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to be successful.
State education departments are required to annually create an accountability report for every public school in the state per the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The school accountability reports outline how schools perform on the accountability elements North Dakota selected within its ESSA plan.
How is our School Doing?
To find more information about our School Accountability Report, visit the dashboard at Insights.nd.gov, select “Find My School,” and search alphabetically. The school accountability report is posted under the Dashboard heading.
Please note that the data made available to the public masks or hides data for groups with ten or fewer students to protect confidential information about individual students. Therefore, if data is unavailable to less than ten students, it will say “no data available.”
Family Engagement
We have strong plans for working to improve the educational programs at our school. We want you and your child(ren) to continue actively participating in our educational system. Please help support our high expectations for student achievement by participating in the school educational initiatives, offering input and support in our endeavors to raise student achievement, or volunteering at the school. Meeting our school’s goals will take a united effort, and I look forward to working with our families to ensure success for each student.
Continuous Improvement
All schools engage in continuous improvement for general support; therefore, our school has completed a continuous improvement plan through Cognia.
As part of the overall school improvement plan, a strategy map is generated for each school. Our strategy map, outlining our key school improvement initiatives, is also available on Insights.
If you have any questions regarding the information in the memorandum, please contact me.
