When was this department created?
The Department of Homeland Security was created on November 25,2002 because of the event that occurred which was the terrorist attack known as 9/11.
Who is a part of this?
Agencies and organizations such as: USCG, FEMA, ICE, USCIS, CBP, and FIETC. These agencies are included because they all deal with foreign policy.
Who's in charge?
Currently Jeh Johnson is the secretary. Previously the secretary was Thomas J. Ridge who was in office from 2002-2005.
Why is this department important?
Homeland Security prevents and disrupts terrorist attacks against the U.S. and is our critical infrastructure and key resources. This department is funded by the U.S. and is located in every state. Currently the department has dealt with issues relating to terrorist attacks from Al-Queda, ISIS and the Boston Marathon bombing.

The Interview a movie focusing on the assassination of North Korean dictator has gotten a lot of attention causing hackers to hack Sony revealing private messages. There has also been threats to the company from these hackers warning the company that the release of this movie will result in attacks. Now the movie has been pulled from theaters and all promotion for the movie has been removed.
the DHS released this statement in regards to the issue: “We are still analyzing the credibility of these statements, but at this time there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the United States,”
