My Name is Gabriela and Biographies
Our story this week My Name is Gabriella, helped us explore the genre of biographies! Many campers have read the 'big head' biographies in our library but there are many, many choices in this genre. As we dug around the biographies with Mrs. Patterson we found biographies that looked like enjoyable stories, non-fiction stories, diaries, and chapter books. We also used Pebble Go, an online source through the Hamilton East Library, to check out a huge selection of biography files. After a biography walk through several of these files, the campers landed on one person to learn more about. This week we will finish our research on these famous and interesting people!
The campers got a chance to share their expertise with the class this week. They read their non-fiction pages aloud to the class and shared the structures they used. Even though several sets of partners read the same book, the choices of structures and information shared was different for each group! Each book group then talked over their choices and their book. We put them in the hallway on our Bussing About Books board so we could share our knowledge! Great work!
We are wrapping up our non fiction writing unit this week. The campers will complete their note taking and organize their expert information to share with all. They are utilizing our K (what do I know), L (what am I learning), and ?? (what surprised me) chart. Added to this format, is going back to make sure what we know is true and if we can add any more details to our known information. The campers are working hard to follow this format and I can see a lot of great growth! This information will also be used to write their end of the unit writing prompt.

All About Math
Place value on the Other Side of the Decimal
We worked with large numbers this week in real world settings. We analyzed maps, charts, and data groups to compare numbers, see how numbers change, and group them according to similarities. To culminate all this work, using our knowledge of time we worked to calculate how many days, hours, minutes, and finally seconds we are old. We used the current year age, 7 or 8, so some campers possibly have a larger number. If you ask your camper how old they are you might get a very large answer! Check out SeeSaw to see their work! Next week we will dig deeper into decimals but for this week we put some note son our math notebook and brainstormed what we knew about them and how they looked when writing. It was a busy week in our math block!
Fact Fluency Reminder:
We have begun to move through the facts of multiplication at an individual pace. Some of the campers have a little work to do yet on subtraction as well. Each day we will spend 5 - 10 minutes with practice, fast math, and fact fluency interviews. The campers will work on their own to practice using their carabiner cards, take fast math exercises, and once a week check in with me on their facts. The goal of the combination of these activities is to have the campers understand the facts on their own and how they relate to other facts, become fluent with the basics of calculation, and have strategy to find the answers when calculating. You can find your campers' cards in the pouch in their binder! Great practice options are below!
