Job Description

Sports coaches help children and young adults taking part in sports work hard towards being the best athlete they can be. They support a range of professional athletes, sports teams, or school groups. They work closely with these athletes in hopes of improving their performance. This job also consists of developing the physical/physiological fitness of an athlete as well as providing real-life condition with the end goal to improve the skills of their athletes.

Certifications Necessary to Practice

Degrees in:

  • Sports Science
  • Health Science
  • Sport Coaching
  • Sports Management

Will all be helpful in the journey to become a sports coach, however, you can only become a qualified coach by gaining the necessary coaching qualification offered by the National Governing Body (NGB) of your chosen sport. 16 years of age is the minimum age you can start practicing to be an assistant coach or leader.

  • Observing and evaluating performance
  • Coming up with feedback and/or corrections for the athlete
  • Appraising strengths and weaknesses in a performance and pointing out areas for athlete to further improve on
  • determining what type of coaching style works for different teams in order for them to be successful
  • Giving instructions using simple, to-the-point language
  • Demonstrating an activity by providing the necessary steps so athletes understand
  • Motivating and encouraging athletes to improve their skills
  • Be an inspiration to do better
  • Gaining knowledge and understanding of fitness, sports psych., and nutrition.
  • Act as a role model

Education Requirements

In order to be a coach you have to obtain the necessary qualifications offered by the National Governing Body for your specific sport. However, it is common that sports coaches also teach or work at educational facilities such as high schools and colleges. Therefore, you have to have the necessary qualifications to assume that job position -- Bachelor's Degree.

The BLS reports the median annual salary for sports coaches was $29,150 in 2013. The best-paid 10 percent in the field made $66,830, while the bottom 10 percent made approximately $17,340.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects employment of coaches to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2022. However, there will be a lot of competition for college and professional coaching jobs.
