Reflex Math Information and Reports
Adaptive and individualized, Reflex is the most effective system for mastering basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for grades 2+.
Our math workshop model supports a balanced mathematics approach wherein students develop computational and procedural math skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving skills. Reflex is one of the many ways students and develop their computational fluency (ie. automatic fact solving).
Research shows that three key components help students develop automatically of math facts: a strong understanding of number relationships, efficient strategies for fact retrieval through practice, and repeated use and selection of strategies once they have been developed. Reflex provides students with ample opportunity to practice their strategies so that they may eventually commit these facts to memory.
In order to continue to grow our students’ computational skills, teachers should establish clear and specific learning goals, monitor learning, and acknowledge effort and achievement with timely and effective feedback.
In the classroom, teachers can implement Reflex by:
· Using classroom data (assessments, individual conferences, small group work, imagine math results) to form groups based on students who may benefit with more repeated practice of facts.
· Utilizing flex time, math workshop time, or consider ‘at home work’, to assign specific Reflex assignments to individual students.
· Frequently using Reflex data to check in on students’ progress. This will help teachers to determine if a student needs intervention (ie. more strategy work with manipulative), more practice, or is ready for new instruction.
· Sharing progress and setting goals alongside students and their families in order to celebrate their work and continue to motivate them to become even more efficient at particular subsets of facts.
Green Light in Reflex is a big goal for students using Reflex. When a student gets the Green Light, they can go to the store and purchase items for their avatars and progress trees. Several Green Light days in a row means that students can unlock a new game of their choice.
The Green Light—located in the upper right corner of the screen—illuminates once a student answers a certain number of facts correctly on a given day. This indicates completion of a good day’s practice toward building math fact fluency.
During each Reflex session, Green Light progress is measured by a ring around the indicator light in the upper right of the screen. As a student advances through their session, the ring will fill in green. Once the ring is full, the indicator light will turn green. This means the student has reached the Green Light.
Reflex Math Reporting
Reflex provides a powerful reporting system that helps you monitor students’ usage, track their progress, and reward their achievements. There are two kinds of reports:
- Individual Reports that provide detail on an individual student
- Class Reports that provide summary data on a class
To access Class Reports, click the appropriate class from your Teacher Dashboard. Bookmark a report to quickly return to it. Four reports are available on the Class Reports sub-menu: Group Status, Usage Summary, Milestones, and Fluency Growth.
