Math Professional Learning
Math Offerings for Summer 2016
A Year in a Day (Each Grade Level)
This will be a deep look into your grade level curriculum map, standards, and other classroom activities intended to extend student thinking in math for an entire school year. One facilitator will be the teacher and facilitate number talks, math workshop components while the other facilitator will speak to the mindset and planning process that goes into all of those components.
By attending this session grade level teachers will:
- Increase their content knowledge in the area of mathematics, specifically within, but not limited to, their grade level standards. This will empower grade level PLCs when addressing student needs and RTI.
- Prepare more authentic assessments and use the information gathered from those assessments to guide instruction.
- Embrace a constructivist pedagogical philosophy that is driven by student inquiry and collaboration.
District level support documents will be provided for teachers to walk away with a "long range" plan for math instruction for the year.
Dates Offered:

1st : June 7 and July 26

Online Book Study: Math Talk that Raises Student Achievement
Math Talk that Raises Student Achievement
Teachers who participate in this online book study of Classroom Discussions: Using Math Talk to Promote Student Learning (published by Math Solutions) will learn distinct talk moves to implement in their classroom which increase student discourse and support the mathematical process standards. Teachers will learn how to plan for and facilitate intentional conversations with students about math.
Teachers will explore and reflect on the following big ideas and questions:
*Why is math talk essential to student understanding?
*What are the specific, teacher, talk moves that facilitate student discourse in mathematics?
*How do I plan for intentional student discourse?
*How do I facilitate discourse in mini lessons and whole group discussions during math workshop?
*How do students learn to make conjectures and critique the reasoning of others?
We have copies of the book for the first 30 people who sign up. You may purchase the book anywhere you like, it ranges from $40-$60 and includes a DVD of classroom clips which will be part of the course.
Once teachers sign up in MLP, they will be enrolled in the Canvas course and can begin working June 1,2016. All work will need to be completed by August 31, 2016.
