News from Guidance
The Guidance Department continued the tradition of Reverse College Day on Wednesday, November 21st. 2018 graduates returned to speak to current seniors about their first experiences with college. They shared helpful hints and encouragement.
The Guidance Department will begin classroom presentations to ninth graders in the early weeks of December. The priority is to present PBGR (Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements). Other graduation requirements will be discussed. We hope students are off to a great start in high school.
Students (and parents) are reminded about DEADLINES for college applications. The counselors have seen a surge of Early Action applications with November 1, November 15 and Dec 1 deadlines. URI’s Talent Development deadline is December 15 (except for Pharmacy, Nursing and Engineering-December 1 deadline).
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) can be a daunting task for students and parents alike. But it is a MUST when applying to college. CCRI applicants to the RI Promise must complete a FAFSA as well. Support is available at the College Planning Center of RI in the Warwick Mall at no cost. Call for an appointment at 401-736-3170.
Drop-in sessions will continue to be offered to seniors throughout December. Counselors email seniors to let them know when these sessions are available-typically on a Friday. Counselors are available beginning at 7:00 am in the Guidance Office conference room along with Chromebooks. Students are encouraged to come into work on CommonApp, sending SAT scores, college essay and more. Counselors are available throughout the day, as needed.

Congratulations Gio!
Gio is the first D-1 baseball player to come out of East in 30 years. He is an inspiration and an example of what it is to be a thunderbolt.
Great job Gio!

Exciting job/internship opportunities for CHSE students!
CCAP (Comprehensive Community Action Program) is offering paid work experiences for CHSE seniors. There are 30 60-hour positions and 9 240-hour positions available. What a great way to gain experience and earn some extra income. All applicants must attend Work Readiness/Financial Literacy training. There will be two opportunities for training: students may choose from the week of 1/7/18 or 1/21/18. The training will be from 2-3:30, Monday through Friday in Room 345.
Juniors will have the opportunity to apply for summer internships through the PrepareRI Internship program. The Program is a joint project of the RI Department of Education and the Governor's Workforce Board. It is managed by statewide career readiness intermediary, Skills for RI's Future. Skills for RI's Future presented the details of the Program to CHSE juniors on November 29th. Interested juniors should attend after-school workshops to refine their interviewing skills and to build their resume. The workshops will also address career exploration and the completion of the PrepareRI Internship Application. The application can be found here. Applications are due no later than February 1, 2019, at 11:59 pm.
