One School, One Book, One Community
We Are Together Tamanend!
What does "One School, One Book, One Community" mean? You guessed it... everyone, students, staff, and we hope, Tamanend parents and guardians, will read the same book, Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick. Students are required to read at least two books each summer. This book will count for the one that is suggested by the District. Students will choose their own second book based on personal interest, parent recommendation, and reading ability. If you are looking for suggestions, here is a list of great summer reads.
One School, One Book, One Community is one more way we can truly be Together Tamanend!
Why Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie?
What are TMS Students and Staff Say about Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie?
Mr. Sterner's Book Review
Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie is a compelling story written with humor and compassion about 13-year-old Steven Alper, who is dealing with his own adolescent angst and issues alongside the very real situation of his younger brother’s leukemia diagnosis.
Mrs. Mancini's Tamanend Connection
When I read Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, I felt like it was written from the perspective of one our own Tamanend students. So many things about this book reminded me of our Tamanend Together way of life. The protagonist, Steven Alper, is a completely likable, honest and funny character. Through Steven’s thoughts and experiences, we’re reminded to be kind, and that everyone we meet is fighting a battle we know nothing about. I was so into this book that I think I read it in two days; I needed to make sure that everything worked out for Steven!
Aaron Relates Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie to KAD
I loved my experience with reading Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie. I thought the storyline was very good, with intriguing and relatable characters. Middle school can be very stressful, and this story shares a more extreme version of middle school, which sometimes provided me with extra motivation. It is also a story that relates to one of our biggest fundraisers at Tamanend, KAD, as it shows a struggling family with a sick child. All in all, I think that it is a great read and that everyone will enjoy reading this book over the summer.
One of Miss Roth's Favorites
Jordan Sonnenblick is one of my favorite young adult authors (after Mr. Landis, of course!). All of his books deal with friendship and family, and they are written in a realistic style with clear humor. The main character in Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, Steven, loves band, has a crush on a girl, and is constantly annoyed by his little brother, Jeffrey. We can all relate to that, but when Jeffrey gets sick, everything in Steven’s world turns upside down. However, the number one reason I like this book is its connection to Tamanend’s relationship with the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund – you’ll have to read the book to see how they relate.

Already Read Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie?
If you have already read Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, then you can read the sequel After Ever After instead. After Ever After is also by Jordan Sonnenblick and includes the same characters and story line. However, After Ever After is written from the perspective of Steven's little brother, Jeffery.
Here is one more idea--if you read Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, and you want to choose After Ever After as your free choice--that is great! (Note: You don't have to read both books, but you may enjoy it.)
