Week 10 Easter Term Friday 20th March 2015
In IPC this week we have been planning a fair test and learning how to make a prediction. The children made fish with polystyrene to test which design would travel the fastest down a slide with water running down it. Being a fair test, all variables were the same except for one. Next week we will be classifying living things and identifying various food chains.
The Café Reading Strategy focus of Comprehension by using non-fiction text features to help understand the meaning of text continued to be a focus. This week, we also incorporated the Expanding Vocabulary skill of using pictures, illustrations and diagrams in a classification activity from cards the children used to help research habitats. They were encouraged to classify the cards, think of how they would label the photo; diagrams, non-fiction text features, etc.
In Writer’s Workshop, the children continued their exploration & writing of Poetry. This week, the children learned about metaphors and how a metaphor helps ordinary writing become poetic language. Poetic language helps the reader see, feel and experience what is happening in the poem.
The Spelling focus was contractions. Next week, the focus is on homonyms.
Grammar lessons began exploring the verb to be. Next week, we will continue our study of to be verbs.
In Maths this week, we began our unit on 'money'. The children had opportunities to use play money to work out and show the cost of a number of items. They added a number of items together to find the total amount. They also learned how to convert dollars and cents into cents eg. $1.20 = 120c and vice versa. Next week the children will be solving one and two step word problems involving money. Please send in any catalogues you have at home that show the price eg. Toys R Us, menus.
