# Ms. Mary's Class

## Week 25: March 5th, 2015

Dear Parents,

Thank you to Ms. Laura (Doan) for providing the Fruit Kebab party for those children who participated in the Screen-free Weekend. For those who chose instead to be rewarded with a No-Homework pass, please take your day off homework this weekend.

Please remember to discuss with your child how you might give to the Nepal Orphanage and send in those items throughout this week - there is a collection box outside our door.

Finally, after you have read the Newsletter, please share the videos and other resources in it with your children - I put them here so that they are easily accessible to you and to our young learners!

Looking forward to another exciting week at ASD!

Kind Regards,

Mary Mulqueen

## Landforms project

Students in Grade 2 are creating a 3D map showing different landforms, with labels to indicate the type of landform, and they are describing the activities people might do at that landform. First, they mapped out their project as a 2D map, showing the map key and compass rose. In the 3D sample below, we can see a snow-covered mountain range, a plateau, rivers, a river valley, a sea, a volcano, an island, a peninsula and a coast. They have started to create models like this in class this week and will finish it next week.

Geography: Water and Landforms

## New Math Unit - Addition & Subtraction

Our focus on addition and subtraction this year takes us to our next unit which will explore strategies like partitioning, partial sums, composing, decomposing, concrete models and drawings to solve word problems - see some examples below. We will be stressing the communication of the students' thinking - how they show us the method they used to solve the problem.

## Where we are now ....

Number Bonds, Arrow Way, PV Represntation with Vertical Adding... which method will be the most efficient to add these numbers?

## Place Value Representation & Vertical Adding

The RDW method for problem solving...

Read the problem - more than once if you need to

Draw and label it - to understand what you know and what you need to find out

Write a number sentence - plus or minus?

Write a word sentence - to answer the question
