TRAFFIC ALERT! Don't Block the Box!
We currently don't have a crossing guard and student lives are at risk.
For student safety and to protect lives, follow all traffic laws: Come to a complete stop, watch both directions for pedestrians, don't "block the box", and never drive on the opposite side of the road into oncoming traffic.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and CHP have been made aware and will soon be out ticketing offenders.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe!
HELP STOP the Spread of COVID-19! WEAR A MASK!
Parents, guardians, daycare providers, and all other adults-- the data is clear! Wearing a mask slows and even stops the spread of COVID-19.
AND, the Delta variant is about twice as transmissible as the original virus that emerged in late 2019.
Across the country and even here in Sacramento County, ICUs are filling up with numerous patients, even with patients who have already been vaccinated but weren't wearing a mask. And, from a recent article by the American Society for Microbiology, "What is clear is that the majority of hospitalizations and COVID-19-associated deaths in the U.S. are occurring in unvaccinated people, leading to a chilling warning from CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky that “this is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”
Our children are not immune. In an August 17 New York Times article, "What is clear is that a confluence of factors — including Delta’s contagiousness and the fact that people under 12 are not yet eligible to be vaccinated — is sending more children to the hospital, especially in areas of the country where the virus is surging."
This isn't meant to scare anyone from attending school. It's a call to action! As adults, it should be our moral imperative to keep our children as safe as possible, so they can stay in school and live as normal of life as possible.
We can avoid the spread of COVID-19 and the Delta variant by simply wearing a mask while out in public AND while on school grounds. Don't do it for the politicians....do it for OUR KIDS!
Mask Wearing Requirements
At LeGette, masks may be taken off or lowered only:
- When staff are teaching, are at least 6-feet from anyone, and they use a face shield for a short period of time.
- If staff members are working alone in a room, eating or drinking, or outside when not in close proximity to students.
- When students are at recess or lunch- only!
Students must still wear a mask before school when they are out on the playground, because it's still considered before school.
Principal's Back-To-School Message
I’d like to once again welcome back our returning families and send out a special welcome to the many new families who have joined the LeGette community. We're really fortunate to have such involved and caring parents. Your partnership in keeping our students safe, healthy, and ready for learning is appreciated.
As most of you are aware, our annual Back-To-School Night for grades 1-6 takes place tonight. I highly encourage all of you to attend these Zoom sessions. Obviously, I'm a little disappointed that I won't be able to present to you in the multipurpose room the great things that we are planning for the year. I'd like to outline some of those increased safety measures and activities that we hope to offer this coming school year.
I highly encourage you to read the entire Blue News as soon as possible, because it contains a lot of information vital to the success of our school and the safety of our students. I can't stress enough the importance of everyone wearing masks while on school property. It's extremely disconcerting and uncomfortable for me to be put in the position of policing the wearing of face masks. My job isn't to engage in a debate over the science or the politicized nature of mask wearing. As principal, my first and foremost obligation is the safety of our students (your children) and our staff. At this time, parents, guardians, and extended family members are only allowed on campus before and after school to pick up students. And, wearing a mask is required.
I’d like to update you on a few items. Since the start of school, due to somewhat smaller class sizes in the primary grades, I've been able to space students out more inside the multipurpose room during lunch. Additionally, our multipurpose room has been set to constant airflow to ensure filtered air is brought into the multipurpose room. In case you weren't aware, the school district still utilizes CDC approved air filters and changes them frequently. New ones were installed in all rooms, including the multipurpose room, the day prior to school starting. Also, I made the decision to allow students to refill their water bottles utilizing the classroom water faucets and multipurpose room water bottle filling stations. Since students take the top off the water bottle prior to filling, there is no risk of the drinking portion being in contact with the water dispensing surface. Drinking fountains are still off limits. And finally, please note that we are constantly making small changes to our systems that are in place to ensure we are continually providing a safe environment for students and staff. All staff members take the current pandemic situation extremely serious. All of us here at LeGette hope that our entire community does as well.
This year we are hoping to bring back a lot of fun school activities that students enjoy. As of now, we are still planning our first Book Fair which begins on September 20. And we hope to kick off our fall enrichment the following week on September 27. As we look towards the rest of the year, our PTO is hoping to hold our annual Jogathon, Holiday Shop, a parent evening fundraising event, Pancake Breakfast, and the spring Book Fair. Additionally, I hope we'll be able to bring Pennies for Patients back to LeGette in the spring for some great money raising challenges. All of these events will be subject to current COVID-19 guidance by the Sacramento County Department of Public Health and our district.
Lastly, our site (and district) has benefited from state money that has been allocated to the sites to assist with student learning. As a result, we've been able to hire two new intervention teachers, seven instructional assistants for grades TK-2, and a counselor intern. These exceptional people will join current staff to form our student intervention team. Our main goal will be to ensure student social/emotional and academic needs are being met. Hopefully you've seen the many skills students have learned during the pandemic. Though not testable skills per se, they will still be of great benefit this year as students step back into school and continue down their learning path.
Once again, welcome back folks! It's an honor and pleasure to be at LeGette as our site principal. We truly have great students, staff, and families.
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at school. Thank, you!
Greg Barge
Principal
