Our Government
Learn about the U.S government!
3 Branches of Government: The legislative branch
The 1st branch of government is the legislative branch. This branch is congress. That is the House of Representatives and the Senate. They come up with the laws, and vote on them. If a bill gets enough votes, it's sent to the president. The legislative branch can also declare war on another country.
3 branches of government: the executive branch
The executive branch is the president. The president can veto, or reject, the laws sent from congress. The president is also the leader of our military, and he comes up with the U.S budget for the year. The president is also in charge of enforcing the laws. He lives in the white house. Right now our president is Barack Obama.
3 branches of government: the Judicial branch
The Juicial branch is the court system. The supreme court is the highest court in the nation. It sets the example for all the other courts. It consists of 9 justices, or judges, and there are between 6 and 12 members of the jury.

Definition of Checks and balances
counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups.
Checks and Balances
The checks and balances system is why we have 3 branches of government. No 1 branch can run the whole country, and none of them are more powerful than the other 2. The checks and balances system is when the 3 branches work together to make laws, enforce laws, and check laws. A single branch could not do that by themselves. The other branches have to make sure one branch does not get too much, or more , power than the other two.
Local and State governments:
Just like we have a country government, we have a local and state government too. New York's governor is Andrew Cuomo. There are 63 senators in New York. Each senator is assigned and area. My senator is Patrick M. Gullivan. My local assembly member is Harry Bronson. There are 150 assembly members! That's a lot!
Government Documents:
Our government was made with 3 important documents. One of those is the declaration of independence. The declaration of independence was how we declared independence form Great Britain, and King George III. Another document is the constitution. The constitution is the set of rules that helped found the rules and laws our government has today. Finally, the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments, or changes, to the constitution.
Our government is a great government. It has a great system that helps the United Stated work.
