Deer Hill School News . May 12, 2023
Dear Deer Hill Families,
Although the number of days until school is out are dwindling, our calendar of events keeps growing. Families are invited to many of the scheduled events, and I've put those dates in bold for your easier reference. There's already lots of activity underway. . .take a peek!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School

Need to Knows
- Is your child entering 4th or 5th grade next year but will not be returning to Deer Hill due to a move or admission to private school? If so, please notify Mrs. McElhinney in the front office through her email: cmcelhinney@cohassetk12.org. This is important information as we build classes.
- Our last day of school is Friday, June 16, 2023. Dismissal will be at 12:15. Breakfast will be served, but no lunch.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- A few weeks ago, Mr. Sears from CHS asked if any Deer Hill students would write letters of encouragement to his AP Physics class before their upcoming AP test. The response from Deer Hill classrooms surpassed anything he or I expected, and the high school students were thrilled when I delivered their "mail" the day before their test this week. On our end, teachers loved seeing former students accomplishing such great things! The words expressed by our students were thoughtful, inspiring, and often landed a good chuckle. A parent of one AP student took time to email his thanks on behalf of his family and shared a profound insight: "Those letters have so much love and admiration as well as some pride & hope. It’s like they were also writing to a version of their future selves!" Beautifully said, Mr. Omran. Because of the success of this project, Deer Hill and CHS are hoping to expand next year and establish an "Adopt an AP Class" program. Stay tuned!
- This week Mr. Youmans launched his bike safety unit with bikes that were funded through a CEF grant. It was such a treat to look out my office window on such a beautiful day and see a class of students pedaling by!
- Many families visited Deer Hill this week for a variety of curriculum showcases such as 4th grade's Math Mornings and Mrs. Clark's Publishing Party which featured her 3rd grade authors. Deer Hill students have learned a lot this year and are so proud to share their accomplishments!
- Deer Hill was happy to host Cohasset Youth Theatre for its production of the musical "Pure Imagination" featuring a cast of Deer Hill students. The performers did an amazing job and delighted audiences with their talents!
- Ms. Kelliher's 4th grade visited Willcutt Commons where they worked on word searches and challenged the seniors to card games. Each 4th grade has (or will!) visit this year and made new cross-generational friendships!
- Mrs. Parrell and her 4th graders passed along the following curriculum connection to me the other day that shows how good books stick with us and become part of our shared experience. "Last fall we read Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. We have been so excited to hang our wishes May 2nd (per the text) on our own "wishtree." This book helped us have conversations around community, belonging and racism. This encouraged us to adopt our own "wishtree" on campus that we pass almost every day on our perimeter snack walks. You will often see students whispering their wishes into the bark."
- Deer Hill did a fabulous job contributing plastic bags on our May the 4th Be With You spirit day. With a total of 32.8 lbs, grade 5 brought in 15.5 lbs, grade 4 brought in 8.1 lbs, grade 3 brought in 5 lbs, and staff brought in 4.2 lbs. We are now an ongoing collection site so keep those bags coming!
