Kindergarten
April
Language Arts
In conjunction with our guided reading instruction, your child will be asked to apply his/her knowledge of blends, digraphs, and long/short vowel sounds as they decode unfamiliar words. In addition, we will be looking for him/her to spell more accurately during writing with blends, digraphs, and vowel sounds.
We will continue instructing your child in guided reading groups that are tiered, based on your child’s reading ability. This small group instruction will give him/her an opportunity to practice applying reading strategies and comprehension. When your child is reading to you, he/she should be working on reading with fluency. This means reading with expression, not speed reading or memorization. To increase comprehension, ask your child questions about what they read. For example: Who were the characters? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story? What was the problem? How would you describe a character (character traits)? What do you think will happen next (after the end of the story)?
It is also our goal for your child’s reading level to match his/her writing level. Please encourage your child to write at home about anything that he/she finds interesting. You can put your child in charge of writing the grocery list, writing thank you notes or keeping in touch with out-of-town relatives. Practice makes perfect!
