Talking is Teaching
"Talking is Teaching" is a national public AWARENESS and ACTION campaign. It is a community-wide effort to ensure the community as a whole knows how important and easy building literacy skills and early brain development in children can be by simply talking, reading and singing to children everyday.
The JCISD is partnering with community members including providers, pediatricians, faith-based leaders, libraries and community-based organizations who are committed to sharing information with parents and caregivers about the critical role they play in their child's early brain development.
The AWARENESS is shown through high-quality printed materials such as bookmarks, posters, talking cards, tote bags, books and stickers. AWARENESS is also seen through PSA's and radio ads. ACTION is shown through trusted messengers who have established positive, trusting relationships with parents/caregivers and are conduits of information and tools. ACTION also looks like distributing materials within the community or becoming a funder of "Talking is Teaching".
"Talking is Teaching" aims to transform everyday places where families spend time into language-rich environments. Laundromats, grocery store chains, nature trails, physicians' offices, libraries and other businesses around the community will display creative materials that encourage families to talk, read and sing while they engage in everyday activities.

What is GSRP?
- Michigan's state-funded preschool for four-year-old children
- Families qualify for free preschool based on annual income guidelines along with other possible risk factors
- GSRP currently serves over 600 students in 40 classrooms throughout the county
If you or anyone you know has a child who will turn four before September 1, 2023, start the application process by clicking on the flyer below!
What is the work of GSRP?
One of the fundamental components of GSRP is the collection and assessment of child data. Teachers collect data using assessment tools designed for preschool children. The data is collected throughout the year and compiled three time per year.
Information from the fall data set is showing us that children are functioning below level in emotional self-regulation and literacy skills. Areas where most children are functioning at expected levels are writing, some math concepts and using an expanded vocabulary. Data review meetings have happened and practices have been put into place to support more children reaching the "at level" criteria. After the winter data set is completed, we will compare that information with the fall numbers to see which interventions worked and plan for what we need to focus on next.
Because of this data collection, we were able to implement the Inclusion Series. Throughout the fall and winter, the early childhood team collaborated with the special education team to present a series of trainings for GSRP teachers. Participants learned about the IEP process and interpreting an IEP, how to use sensory material with students, CORE vocabulary, and communications systems. They also heard first-hand experiences of parents who have children with special needs.
Upcoming Events
Preschool Round Up
We will be holding two events for families/caregivers who are interested in the 2023-2024 GSRP and Head Start preschool programs.

Kindergarten Kits & Kindergarten Round Up
Each year the Early Childhood Team puts together Kindergarten Kits that include items to help children prepare for Kindergarten. Some of these items include scissors, crayons, a book, foam letters, and a dry erase board. This year, we will be putting together 1600 kits and giving them to Jackson County Schools to give to their incoming Kindergarten students at Kindergarten Round Up. For details on your school districts' round up, look directly on your school website or social media.
