Fryelands Falcon Flyer
October 31, 2019
From the Principal
Dear Fryelands Families,
October is National Disability Awareness Month
Teaching children about the contributions of particular populations to our nation’s history, such as women and people of various ethnic backgrounds, has been recognized with dedicated months as well as other educational programs. Disability history, however, has been largely ignored in school curricula.
Anyone, regardless of age, race, or heritage, may become a part of the population of people with disabilities at any time. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990. As a result of this landmark legislation, communities and workplaces across the nation have become more inclusive and welcoming for America’s nearly 40 million people with disabilities.
Thank You Veterans
Please join us on Thursday, November 7th at 9:30 a.m., for our annual Veteran’s Day Assembly, which honors the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. As citizens, we have a responsibility to educate our youth on the contributions and sacrifices veterans have made throughout the years. We would also like for families to invite veterans to come join us at our assembly. Students are asked to wear our school colors and make it a Red, White, and Blue Day on November 7th in honor of our veterans and Veteran’s Day!
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month
Every child needs a safe place to learn and interact with their peers, in healthy and supportive ways. Bullying is a repeated negative behavior that takes advantage of a less-powerful person, and sometimes even makes the child who is bullied feel at fault. Hitting, name calling, shunning and shaming are all forms of bullying. So are spreading rumors, gossiping and making threats online.
Recognize, Refuse, and Report Bullying.
We want to work with families to help students recognize bullying, refuse to accept it happening to them or others, and to report it to adults so that we can help eliminate it from happening. We also know that bystanders play a significant role in stopping bullying or supporting bullying based on their actions, too.
How does bullying differ from other forms of conflict?
*Other Conflict/ Fighting*
Between friends/equals/peers
Spontaneous/occasional
Accidental/not planned
No serious, lasting harm
Equal emotional reaction
Not for domination/control
Often a sense of remorse
May try to solve problem
* Bullying*
Not friends/imbalance of power
Repeated over time
Intentional
Physical/emotional harm
Unequal emotional reaction
Seeking control/possession
No remorse-blames target
No effort to solve problem
Please remember that specifics will vary with each incident.
Actions on either side of this chart may result in discipline
If you have questions or concerns regarding harassment, intimidation, or bullying, please contact me at presleyj@monroe.wednet.edu or at 360-804-3400.
Sincerely,
Jeff Presley

Highly Capable Services
There is a week left to refer students to qualify for highly capable services. Any student in grades K, 1, 3, 5-11 may be referred by staff, family, community members or the students themselves. All students in 2nd and 4th grade are automatically screened and therefore no referral is necessary. The nomination process for the Highly Capable Program is open until – November 8th. When a referral is received, the screening process will be triggered to determine a student’s eligibility for highly capable services. Referred students will be screened in January. Please visit our Highly Capable Program web page for referral forms or contact your school counselor for more information.

Attendance
School attendance is a priority at Fryelands Elementary. Keeping students in school and safe every day takes the cooperation of parents and the school. IF YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE TO MISS SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE SEND A NOTE OR CALL THE 24-hour ATTENDANCE LINE AT 360-804-3401. If parents do not contact the school by phone or note, the student is considered unexcused. (The office will attempt to contact the parent/guardian of any child who is marked absent without notification to the office.) Unexcused absences will be monitored and the school will follow district policy and state law.
TARDINESS
Tardiness interferes with individual progress and classroom procedures. Students who arrive at school after 8:55 are to report to the office to receive an admit slip. Parents will be contacted if chronic tardiness begins to disrupt the educational program. If a student shows a pattern of poor attendance through excessive tardiness, our guidance counselor will call to set up an appointment to offer any services that the school may be able to provide. You may request, in writing, a copy of your child’s attendance for review at any time.
